Sports Flashback March 8-14

March 10, 1971 — The basketball season ended for the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears after dropping a 58-56 overtime decision to the Brimley Bays in a Class D regional opener. Dave Hardwick led the Black Bears with 19 points. Kim Hartman added 12 and Joe LaVigne finished with 10. Reggie Robbins poured in 32 points for Brimley. Don Hyvarinen tallied 16.

March 12, 1971 — Dick Goshorn rolled a national honor count 704 series at the Bowl-a-rama Lanes. He opened with a 219 game, followed by 263 and 222 while bowling for the Idle Hour Bar in the Happy Hour League.

March 13, 1971 — The Holy Name Crusaders won their Class B regional basketball opener in a 64-39 conquest of Ishpeming. Bill Skradski led Holy Name with 17 points. Tom Ness chipped in with 15 and Joe Joran scored 10. Mike Soderberg paced the Hematites with 14.

The Escanaba Eskymos weren’t as fortunate as they dropped a 64-58 decision to Muskegon in a Class A regional opener. Esky’s Tom Kangas hit 18 points, finishing his career with a school-record 1,190. Mike Cousineau added 13 points and Rick Brookes had 10.

March 9, 1981 — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves scored three in double digits, but it wasn’t enough to prevent them from dropping a 68-66 overtime decision to Crystal Falls Forest Park in a Class D district final. Mike Linder paced the Wolves with 19 points. Jan Stage tossed in 16 points to go with 12 rebounds and Gene Stage had 13 points and 11 boards. Scott Kivimaki and Jerry Shoup led the Trojans with 14 points each. Andy Kopf hit 12 and Emil Kezerle and Roger Grandahl contributed 10 apiece.

March 13, 1981 — Rapid River’s tournament run ended in a 76-60 loss to the Ewen-Trout Creek Panthers in a Class D regional opener. Scott Majestic led the Rockets with 22 points. Craig Moser added 15 and Jim Miller finished with 11. Ken Sundling collected 12 rebounds. Dave Besonen hit 20 points for E-TC. Dennis Mackey added 17 points. Jim Anderson contributed 14 and Dave Johnson had 10.

Gladstone’s Mary McCarthy won three individual events, but the Gwinn gymnasts won the dual meet 75.3-70.35. McCarthy took vault and floor exercise with 7.5 points and balance beam at 7.1. Sara Kalishek was runner-up in all-around and floor and Lorraine Baribeau took third in all-around and beam.

March 14, 1981 — The Stephenson Eagles ran their winning streak to 21 games as they rolled past the Manistique Emeralds 72-39 in a Class C regional opener. Mike Tyrrell paced the Eagles with 18 points. Mark Simon and Steve Frederiksen tossed in 14 apiece and Dave Machalk added 10. Joe Vaughn had 11 points for the Emeralds.
