Sports Flashback March 28
March 28, 1966 — Five area players were recognized for their efforts this season during the annual basketball meeting of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association
Escanaba senior Rick Kuchenberg and juniors Paul Miller and Dave Nyquist earned All-U.P. honors in Class A. Manistique senior Tom Brawley landed a second-team berth in Class B and Trenary junior Kim Peterson did likewise in Class D.
Garden captured the Class B title in the Gold Medal Classic tournament at Hermansville, edging defending champ Powers Gold Star 63-61. Warren Groleau led the winners with 20 points. Cliff Perras and Dennis Vanlerberghe paced Gold Star with 12 apiece.
March 22, 1971 — Pat Johnston hit her second national honor count series within a week, rolling 611. She opened with a 199 game followed by 234 and 178 for Coyne Chevrolet in the Thursday 9 p.m. League at Bowl-a-rama Lanes.
March 23, 1971 — The Gladstone girls participated in the Upper Peninsula Gymnastics Association meet at Iron Mountain where Cathy Van Brockin took first in uneven bars. Denise Anderson and Patty Plouff also placed on bars. Breneice LaChance placed third on balance beam and Plouff added a fifth in vault.
John Vardigan, former Escanaba High School and Northern Michigan University track and field star, captured the indoor Amateur Athletic Union state pole vault title with a leap of 14 feet. He also cleared 14 feet while taking seventh in the Eastern Michigan Track Classic.
March 24, 1971 — Dick Smith and Jack Fleetwood scored 28 points apiece, leading Labre’s to a 92-72 basketball triumph over U.P. Agri Products while claiming the title in the Community School League. John Whitens led U.P. Agri Products with 20 points and Don Whitens added 19.
March 26, 1971 — Robinson’s Furniture retained its Escanaba City League title in a 74-65 victory over Ness Construction. Bob Randall led the winners with 30 points and Lynn LaPlant added 22. Fred Boddy paced Ness with 19 and Mike LaFleur chipped in with 16.
March 23, 1981 — The Stephenson Eagles captured the Class C state basketball title with a 64-48 victory over Three Oaks River Valley. Mark Simon led the Eagles with 19 points and nine rebounds. Mike Tyrrell and Dave Machalk added 14 points each and Steve Frederiksen contributed 13 points and six assists.
“We’re extremely happy to win,” coach Paul Miller said. “Class C basketball in Michigan is great high school basketball as far as I’m concerned. I think the thing I’m most proud of is that nothing was given to this team. They worked hard and made the commitment, worked hard over the summer for the past couple of years and I’m proud of them for that. I really mean that.”
March 26, 1981 — Class B basketball got underway in the Gold Medal Classic at Hermansville as Bark River Ken’s Shell edged the Chalet of Niagara, Wis. 91-89. Bucky Phillips and Brian Kleiman paced Ken’s with 21 points apiece. Tim Beauchamp scored 14 for the Chalet.
In another contest, Brian Summers poured in 32 points, helping Gladstone Wnuck Concrete outlast Powers Leo’s Mobil 97-91. Paul Kotz added 22 for the winners and Paul Polfus paced Leo’s with 22.
