Sports Flashback March 15-21

March 21, 1966 — Wally Slade tossed in 23 points, leading Escanaba Tom’s Signs to a 61-54 basketball victory over Daggett in the opening round of the 28th Annual Gold Medal tournament at Hermansville.

Cliff Perras hit 23 points while leading Powers Gold Star past Escanaba Skinny’s 68-49 and the Norway Merchants eliminated the Escanaba Merchants 66-59 despite 26 points from John Berrigan.

March 15, 1971 — Gary Kleiman pumped in 23 points to go with 11 rebounds as the Holy Name Crusaders captured the Class B regional title in a 74-51 conquest of Kingsford. Tom Ness and Charlie Creten added 14 points apiece. Dan Jarvis paced the Flivvers with 22.

Hot-shooting Chuck Day poured in a tournament-record 43 points as the Norway Knights bombed the Bessemer Speedboys 65-43 in a Class C regional final at Northern Michigan University’s C.B. Hedgcock Fieldhouse. Day’s effort was four points more than the previous record by Republic-Michigamme’s Bruce Pantti three days earlier.

Day finished with 68 points in the tourney, topping the previous-best by Nahma’s Warren Groleau, who scored 62 in 1959. He also drained 18 field goals against the Speedboys, two better than Groleau’s top single-game effort, tied the tournament’s field goal total of 26 which he shares with Bob Gale of Trout Creek from 1966.

Mike Debakker added nine points against Speedboys, who were led by Allen Kellett, Clayton Kananen and Bob Obradovich with eight apiece.

Pat Johnson rolled a national honor count series this season, hitting 600 in the Mixed Couples League at the Bowl-a-rama Lanes. She started with a 171 game, followed by 231 and 191.

March 19, 1971 — It was the end of an era as the Holy Name Crusaders bowed to the Ludington Orioles 62-47 in a Class B state quarterfinal basketball contest. Bill Skradski scored 15 points for Holy Name High School which will close this spring due to a lack of funding. Joe Harvey added 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Crusaders, who won 20 straight.

March 16, 1981 — The Stephenson Eagles ran their winning streak to 22 games, earning the Class C regional championship by squeezing past Ishpeming Westwood 68-66 in an overtime thriller. Mark Simon led the Eagles with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Mike Tyrrell contributed 19 points and 16 boards. Steve Frederiksen tallied 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Todd Pontti scored 20 points and Troy Mattson added 19 for the Patriots.

March 19, 1981 — Stephenson continued its post-season journey, outlasting the Reed City Coyotes 74-66 in double overtime in a state quarterfinal contest at Cheboygan. Frederiksen led the way with 26 points. Tyrrell hit 16 and Dave Machalk chipped in with 14. Scott Frederick paced Reed City with 22.

March 21, 1981 — The Eagles advanced to the state championship game after defeating the Grand Rapids South Christian Sailors 71-63 in a semifinal match-up. Machalk was Stephenson’s leader this time with 22 points. Frederiksen added 20 and Simon had 16. Jim Schreur led the Sailors with 18.
