Sports Flashback March 1-7

March 3, 1971 — The Manistique Emeralds opened Class B district basketball play by defeating the Rudyard Bulldogs 65-61. Jerry Sample paced the Emeralds with 30 points and 14 rebounds. Terry Demars added 11 points and Dave Mickelson hit 10. Greg Fitzpatrick scored 13 points for the Bulldogs. Steve Jarvie tallied 11 and John McLain had 10.

The Powers North Central Jets rolled past the Bark River-Harris Broncos 66-38 in a Class D district opener. Lee Vincent scored 20 points for the Jets. Tim Pokladowski led the Broncos with 11.

Tony VanDamme scored 21 points, leading the Rock Little Giants past the Rapid River Rockets 50-42 in another Class D opener. Craig Westlund added 11. Mark Sigfrids paced with Rockets with 17.

March 5, 1971 — The Escanaba Eskymos advanced to the Class A district final by eliminating Marquette 82-65. Tom Kangas hit 21 points and Mike Cousineau added 20 for the Eskymos. Doug Howard had 10. Jim Piasecki scored 25 for Marquette. Dan Laurich collected 15 and Dave Bishop had 14.

The Big Bay de Noc Black Bears won their Division 4 district semifinal in an 87-59 conquest of Perkins. Joe Lauscher tossed in 39 points for the Yellowjackets. Dave Hardwick paced the Black Bears with 22. Kim Hartman contributed 19. Dennis Benard chipped in with 18 and Joe LaVigne added 17.

March 6, 1971 — The Holy Name Crusaders set a school record single-game scoring record, earning the Class B district title in a 97-54 rout of Manistique. Joe Joran led the Crusaders with a career-high 27 points. Gary Kleiman added 23. Bill Skradski tallied 19 and Charlie Creten chipped in with 14. Sample paced the Emeralds with 23 points and Mickelson finished with 17.

March 4, 1981 — Theresa Berube, a sophomore from Escanaba, helped the Northern Michigan University gymnasts post a surprising victory in the Northwestern Invitational at Evanston, Ill. Berube won vault with a school-record 8.8 points and copped uneven bars at 8.55.

The Wildcats scored 124.85 points, followed by Northwestern and Valpariso at 122.85. NMU’s Kris Stanfield added a first in floor exercise at 8.6.

Escanaba’s basketball season ended with a 56-46 loss to Marquette in a Class A district opener. Paul DeMay hit 15 points and Gary Greis scored 13 for the Eskymos. Joe Gray and Jeff Olson collected 14 points and seven steals apiece and Tom McCormick finished with 10 points for Marquette.

The Gladstone Braves were eliminated from the Class B district tournament by dropping 64-59 decision to the Gwinn Modeltowers. Steve Johnson led the Braves with 25 points. Alan Verbrigghe added 16 and Bob Ballard had 13. Darren Sinneave paced the Modeltowners with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Trae Forgette tallied 17 points.

March 7, 1981 — The Manistique Emeralds copped the Class C district title by defeating the Newberry Indians 52-46. Joe Vaughn scored 13 points to go with 12 boards. Ron Burnis contributed 11 points and Joe LaLonde chipped in with 10 for the Emeralds. Mike Hill was Newberry’s leader with 13 points.

The Rapid River Rockets were crowned Class D district champs following a 72-57 triumph over the Powers North Central Jets. Scott Majestic led the Rockets with 24 points. Craig Moser added 17 points. Robert Hardwick contributed 12 points and Ken Sundling collected 11 points and 10 rebounds. Dale Miller paced the Jets with 18 points and 12 boards.
