Great Lakes Hockey releases season awards

ESCANABA — Graham Johnson enjoyed a productive season and was rewarded for his efforts during the annual meeting of the Great Lakes Hockey Conference coaches Wednesday.

The Escanaba senior received his due by being named the league’s Player of the Year with Painesdale Jeffers’ Aaron Helminen selected Coach of the Year.

Those selected as first-team forwards were Calumet’s Nathan Londo, Painesdale Jeffer’s Brogan Turner and Marquette’s Brody Shelton.

First-team defensemen include Esky’s Nolan Bink and Calumet’s Drake Niemela with Jeffers’ Kasen Helminen named the league’s top goaltender.

Second-team forwards are Esky’s Ben Sands, Hancock’s Kirby Storm and Calumet’s Erik Loukus.

Those picked as second-team defensemen are Marquette’s Brody LeMire and Jeffers’ Blake Helminen with Marquette goalie Parker Nevenhoven gaining similar honors.

Marquette’s Jacob Spagnuolo was named Rookie of the Year.

Honorable mention recipients are Calumet goaltender Beau Jukuri, Esky defenseman Owen LaBonte, Hancock forward Connor Helminen, Jeffers defenseman Griffin Heinonen, Kingsford forward Will Murvich, Marquette forward Seth Sandstrom and Negaunee forward Nolan O’Dovero.
