Sports Flashback Feb. 15-21
Feb. 16, 1966 — Spencer Bichel scored 23 points to go with 20 rebounds as the Carney-Nadeau Wolves upset the Powers-Spalding Tigers 70-67 in a Big Seven Conference basketball match-up. Brian Forgette added 15 points. Richard Piche paced the Tigers with 20. David Smith finished with 15.
Feb. 17, 1966 — Darrel LaVigne poured in 37 points, leading the Garden Jets past the Perkins Yellowjackets 97-78. Brent Rochefort added 28. Art VanDamme led Perkins with 26 and Reggie Depuydt tallied 21.
Feb. 19, 1966 — Dave Nyquist tossed in 17 points as the Escanaba Eskymos rolled past the Holy Name Crusaders 84-57 in a Great Northern Conference match-up. Paul Miller and Rick Kuchenberg contributed 11 each. Tom Smith scored 13 and Dave Cannon chipped in with 11 for the Crusaders.
The Manistique Emeralds stayed in third place in the Great Lakes Conference by defeating the Gladstone Braves 82-68. Tom Brawley and Ron Asp led the Emeralds with 20 points apiece. Dave Barton tallied 17. Keith Apelgren paced Gladstone with 16 points. Mark Goodman had 13.
George Tucker of Escanaba rolled a national honor count 705 series, hitting 255, 209 and 241 games at Midway Lanes in Gladstone. Tucker became the first bowler this season to score more than 700 and the second to accomplish that at Midway where Tony Gillis previously bowled a 713 series.
Feb. 21, 1966 — The Rapid River Rockets captured the Central League basketball title in a 96-45 rout of Nahma. Allan Pasi and Gene Bezzi paced the Rockets with 15 points apiece. Bob Anderson and Tom Nelson tossed in 12 each. Tom Safford contributed 11 and Dick Forslund had 10. Steve Ritter led the Arrows with 12 and Rich Schafer had 10.
Feb. 15, 1971 — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves recorded their 15th consecutive victory as they squeezed past the Channing Railroaders 59-58. Ed Benson paced the Wolves with 22 points and 17 rebounds. John Anderson contributed 13 ponts and John Perras scored 11. Mark Cambray, who sank 12-of-13 field goals, led Channing with 27 points.
Paul Groleau drained a 25-foot jump shot in the final 17 seconds as the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears then hung on for a 49-48 triumph. Kim Hartman led the Black Bears with 15 points. Randy Strasler and Benard finished with 12 each.
Dennis Lancour scored six times, leading the Bay de Noc Twins to an 11-9 hockey victory over the Gogebic Chiefs at the Colonial Skateland in Ironwood. Dennis Beaudry and John Ferrari hit two apiece. Tim Goymerac added the remaining goal and Twins’ goaltender Bob Grenfell stopped 45 shots.
Feb. 17, 1971 — The Holy Name Crusaders clinched the Great Northern Conference basketball title by outlasting the Esanaba Eskymos 78-77. Joe Joran led Holy Name with a career-high 25 points. Gary Kleiman tallied 19 points and 11 boards. Bill Skradski hit 17 points and Tom Ness chipped in with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Tom Kangas was Esky’s leader with 23 points and 21 rebounds. Mike Cousineau also scored 23 points and Steve Rosemurgy finished with 16.
The Bay de Noc Community College Norseman finished their season on a positive note as they rallied past the St. Nobert junior varsity 73-72. John Lewandowski hit 24 points for Bay, which trailed 39-28 at halftime. Mark Weber tossed in 18. Tom Lippens contributed 15 and Darel LaVigne had 11.
Feb. 19, 1971 — Carney-Nadeau captured the Skyline Conference title in an 81-61 conquest of Champion. John Perras scored 25 points. Benson added 23 and John Janofski had 12.
