ESCANABA — The Bay College Norse took care of business here Wednesday night as the women’s team defeated North Central Michigan College (NCMC) 96-38 while the men’s team won 98-37.
In the women’s game the Norse jumped out to a 7-2 lead as sophomore Mckenzie Hoffmeyer scored 5 of the first seven points for Bay as they took a 7-2 lead. The Norse extended the lead to 26-12 after one quarter of play. The Norse outscored the Timberwolves 17-9 in the second quarter highlighted by 3-pointers from Nina Bower and Gracie Kleikamp. The Norse broke the game open in the third quarter as they outscored the Timberwolves 35-9 to take a 78-30 lead after three.
“We came out focused tonight,” Bay women’s coach James Fassett said. “It was the first game of the second round of conference games and we were just looking to establish a tone for the rest of the season and I think we did a good job of that tonight.”
The Norse shot 39 percent on the night compared to 32 percent for (NCMC). The turnover differential leaned heavily in favor of the Norse as they forced 35 turnovers and only committed six.
Hoffmeyer led the way for the Norse with 25 points and eight steals to go along with eight rebounds and Lauren Zawada had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
In the men’s game, the Norse jumped out a 7-0 lead highlighted by a 3-pointer from freshman Emerson Droubie and moments later Droubie delivered a big dunk to cap off the 7-0 run to start/
“Playing down to our competition is not something we have been taught,” Droubie said. “We have had times this season where we have played down to our competition and tonight we came out with the mindset to get on them early and that is what we did.”
The Norse took a 48-14 lead into halftime and never looked back.
The Norse were led by Droubie with 33 points and eight steals to go along with six rebounds. Taveon Vann had 16 points and Trey Frey III added 12 points off the bench.
The Norse shot 15 percent as a team and held (NCMC) to 24 percent shooting. The Norse forced 24 turnovers and only committed eight on the night.
“We defended really well tonight,” Bay men’s coach Matt Johnson said. “We forced a lot of turnovers and got a lot of easy transition baskets off of those turnovers.
The Norse return to action Saturday as they travel to face Montcalm Community College.
