Marrons win thriller over Braves in conference action

GLADSTONE — 21 points from senior Owen Gereau and two others in double figures was not enough for Gladstone as they fell 65-62 in a Great Northern Conference matchup here Friday.
Along with 21 from Gereau Junior Lonnie Davey scored 18 and sophomore Alex Prins added 10.
“We kept battling throughout,” Braves coach Jake Keisby said. I give our guys credit even when we got close and they made runs, we didn’t give up, we were hustling to make plays and that will help us in the long run.”
Menominee jumped out to an early 13-2 lead as junior Talen Woods hit two 3-pointers to put the Maroons up 6-0. Senior Tanner Theuerkauf drove in for a layup to make it 8-0 and after Braves senior Teagan Reynolds knocked down a pair of free throws, Maroons senior Nathan Komp scored a pair of layups and split a pair of free throws to put the Maroons up 13-2.
“My shot was feeling pretty good tonight,” Woods said. “I thank my teammates for finding me when I was open and for being able to knock down shots for us in crucial moments.”
The Braves answered with a 12-3 to cut the deficit to three. Gereau hit his first five 3-pointers and Prins drove to the basket for a layup to cut the deficit to 13-7. Sophomore Will Inghram delivered a big dunk that cut the deficit to four. Menominee senior Jacob Schultz hit a 3-pointer to put the Maroons up 16-9. Prins knocked down a pair of free throws and Ingrham drove to the basket for a layup to cut the deficit to 16-13.
The Maroons held on to lead 20-18 after one quarter of play. The Braves took their first lead early in the second quarter as Inghram drove to the basket for a layup to put the Braves up 21-20. Menominee junior Dylan Beal split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 21. Davey gave the Braves the lead again on a 3-pointer to put Gladstone up 24-21 and Inghram scored a layup after Menominee split a pair of free throws to put the Braves up 26-22 that was the largest lead of the game for the Braves.
Menominee closed out the second quarter on a 12-0 run highlighted by two more 3-pointers by Woods to put the Maroons up 34-26 at the break.
The Braves closed out the third quarter on a 13-6 run to cut the deficit to three at 49-46 and Davey scored a layup on the Braves first possession of the fourth quarter to pull the Braves within one at 49-48.
Theuerkauf hit another 3-pointer, one of three in the quarter, to put the Maroons up 52-48.
Gereau hit a 3-pointer and had a pair of layups to pull the Braves within three at 58-55. Gereau had seven of his 21 points in the fourth quarter,
“If they are going to leave me that open I’ll shoot the ball,” Gereau said. “I don’t normally shoot the ball that much but I saw how far off they were on me and I was confident in my ability to shoot the ball.”
Late in the fourth quarter, Davey knocked down a 3-pointer to pull the Braves within one at 61-60 and again at 63-62 on a driving layup but with the Maroons up 65-62, Prins’ last second 3-pointer was blocked as the Maroons held on for the win.
