Jets fly past Wolves in conference action
CARNEY — The Powers North Central girls had things their way here Monday night in a 46-26 basketball triumph over the Carney-Nadeau Wolves.
That was especially true in the first half as the Jets took a 26-4 lead into the halftime locker room.
North Central extended its lead to 32-4 on a 21-foot jump shot from the left wing by sophomore Addy Otradovec early in the third quarter.
The Wolves didn’t just roll over, however, as they trimmed their deficit to 36-18 on back-to-back 20-foot jumpers from the right wing by sophomore Jayden Laurin late in the third stanza.
“I don’t put anything past Carney,” Jets’ coach Brooke Granquist said. “They’ve got three-point shooters. There was nothing that was super unexpected. The first half was not a normal game for them.”
Otradovec sank a pair of free throws to put North Central up by 20 points.
Seventh-grader Aubrey Corrigan drained a buzzer-beating jumper from top of the key to bring the Wolves within 38-21 at the end of the third.
Laurin drained a 20-foot jumper to bring C-N with 41-24 early in the fourth stanza.
The Jets, however, despite struggling with their shooting through the remainder of the game, didn’t allow the Wolves to get any closer.
“We couldn’t hit a layup,” Granquist said. “They kept fighting and we weren’t finishing shots. It wasn’t a normal night for us from the free throw line. I know how young they are, but our girls are young, too.”
North Central took a 13-2 lead on a layup by senior Dalyn Otradovec on a pass from her sister before the end of the opening frame.
Eighth-grader Jenah Ernest shave C-N’s deficit to 14-4 on a pair of gifters.
The Jets, who answered with an 18-0 run, finished the second quarter on a 12-foot jumper by freshman Autumn Triest.
North Central finished 12-of-26 from the free throw line and committed 22 turnovers. The Wolves had 23 miscues.
Addy Otradovec paced the Jets with 20 points. Triest added 13. Laurin paced the Wolves with nine.
The Jets (5-7) host Stephenson Thursday. The Wolves (5-9) then host the Eagles Monday.
