Hannahville and Ojibwe Charter put on three-point barrage

HANNAHVILLE — This wasn’t a three-point shooting contest, but the Hannahville and Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter shot the lights out in a Northern Lights League basketball match-up here Saturday.

That was especially true in the third quarter when they combined for 11 of their 25 trifectas en route to Hannahville’s 76-61 triumph which wrapped up the No. 2 seed in this weekend’s Northern Lights League tournament at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie.

“This was a big weekend for us,” Hannahville coach Jon Bintner said. “We set a goal with these games. It makes a big difference playing one game on Friday instead of two. We would have fresher legs if we make it into Saturday.”

Hannahville, which also won Friday’s game, improved to 8-10 overall and 8-3 in the league with its third straight victory. Ojibwe dropped 10-3 overall and 8-3 in the league with its third consecutive loss.

The Hannahville girls came up a little short, dropping a 43-36 decision to Ojibwe.

Hannahville’s boys drained seven from behind the arc in the third frame, resulting in a 62-51 lead entering the final eight minutes.

Ojibwe was leading 37-33 late in the second stanza before sophomore Keenan Smith hit a layup seven seconds before halftime to bring Hannahville within two points.

The Eagles took a 38-37 lead on a pair of free throws by Henry Lyon with 5:26 left in the third.

Hannahville answered with a 10-2 run, surging to a 47-40 lead on a 22-foot jump shot from the right wing by senior Sam Beaver.

Ojibwe got within 50-46 late in the third before the Soaring Eagles closed that quarter with a 12-5 run.

A layup by junior Draven Gentry brought Ojibwe within 67-59 with 3:21 remaining.

Hannahville responded with seven unanswered points when Devin Arteaga sank a pair of gifters for an insurmountable 74-61 advantage.

Beaver hit five 3-pointers and 26 points. Arteaga added 16. Keenan Smith, who went down with an ankle injury in the fourth quarter, finished with 14 and M.J. Smith had 10.

“We don’t wake up for the Saturday morning games like we do for the night games,” Bintner said. “The kids tend to stay up too late on Friday nights. We started a little slow today. Although, I’m pleased with the way we battled back in the second half. We rebounded much better than in the first half. Sam had another good game and Devin played well. Keenan has really come a long way and M.J. is stepping up and becoming a shooter. Hopefully, we’ll have Keenan back next weekend.”

Gentry led Ojibwe with 18 points. Junior Jayce Anderson tallied 15 and Sebastian Lewis had 10.

Hannahville, which trailed 21-13 early in the second quarter, committed 11 turnovers. Ojibwe had eight Saturday.

The Hannahville girls led 19-15 at the intermission.

In the third quarter, Ojibwe took a 21-19 lead on a leaning 23-foot shot by Kendrayo Teeple who extended that to 32-23 on a 20-foot jumper from the right wing by period’s end.

A steal and layup by Sienna Teeple put the Eagles up 38-26 midway through the fourth.

Hannahville trailed 40-28 with 3:01 remaining, but shaved its deficit to 40-33 on Laura LeClaire’s jumper from top of the key at 1:52.

The Soaring Eagles, however, were unable to get any closer.

“We had to knock down some shots,” Ojibwe coach Arlen Kuzmik said. “This gives us some momentum. We needed it. We have two seniors and scrimmage with the boys in practice. The girls learn a lot from that.”

Teeple hit five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. Kuzmik added 13 points and Karma Doyle grabbed 18 rebounds.

Brittany Thunder paced Hannahville with 11 points and Laniceya Malinowksi had nine.

Ojibwe, which also won Friday’s contest 40-36 in overtime, improved to 2-4.

The Soaring Eagles (0-10) had 13 turnovers and Ojibwe finished with 16.

“We tried a couple things we didn’t do in practice,” Hannahville coach Seth Miller said. “We got outrebounded real bad. Mentally, giving up all those rebounds took the wind out of our sails. I’m happy with our defense, but not happy with giving them all those opportunities.”
