Gladstone senior Tyler Soderman named swimmer of the year in the U.P.

MARQUETTE — Tyler Soderman had quite a day at the Upper Peninsula Swim Finals, earning Swimmer of the Year honors here Saturday.

The Gladstone senior won the boys’ 50-yard freestyle race in 23.03 seconds and copped 100 freestyle at 50.92, both personal best times.

Marquette was crowned champion for the eighth straight year with 298 points, followed by Kingsford 200 and Sault Ste. Marie 184. Gladstone placed fifth at 142.

The Marquette girls earned their fifth consecutive title with 311 points. They were followed by Houghton 226½ and Kingsford 209. Gladstone took sixth at 117½.

“The Braves had a very good day at the U.P. Finals,” Gladstone coach Tom Desy said. “The swimmers came prepared and almost all of them had their personal-best times which is when you want it.”

Senior Irene Neumeier provided the Gladstone girls with a first in 200 freestyle at 2:06.73, more than six seconds ahead of the field.

“The girls’ 200 medley relay team of Izzy Dykema, Irene Neumeier, Rayne Martina and Allison Lesnieski had an awesome swim, taking almost eight seconds off their seeded time and placing third. Irene followed that up, taking almost nine seconds off her seeded time in the 200 freestyle. In the 50 freestyle, freshman Rayne Martin took more than a second off her time to finish in a tie for fourth. Irene had her best time in the 100 butterfly and finished second in that event and Izzy also recorded her best time in 100 backstroke and finished fourth.”

Manistique’s highest finish was sixth in the 200 freestyle relay.

Soderman also helped the Gladstone boys take third in the 200 freestyle relay. Joining him were sophomores Mason Couvillion and Cole Everett and freshman Jake Lanaville.

“Tyler won the 50 and 100 freestyle, both with best times,” Desy said. “Jake made the podium twice, taking fifth in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle and sophomore Peter Hook took fourth in 100 backstroke and seventh in 200 IM, also with best times.”

Junior Spencer Miotke was Manistique’s top finisher with fourth in 200 IM (2:28.74).
