Gladstone defeats Negaunee in regional action

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone wrestlers continued their winning ways here Thursday night as they posted a 60-18 triumph over the Negaunee Miners in a Division 3 team regional opener.

“They all wrestled hard,” Braves’ coach Ryan Harrenstein said. “They’re a well coached team. Their coach (Andy Asikainen) is a good friend of mine. There’s a lot of good wrestlers on that team. They were training with us all week and we saw them a lot during the year.”

Kingsley and West Branch Ogemaw Heights also qualified for the regional, but were unable to complete their trip to Delta County due to falling ice on the Mackinac Bridge.

The two downstate teams will meet at Gladstone for their regional opener Monday at 5 p.m. with the winner facing the Braves in the title match.

The Braves trailed 12-0 before Gabe Carlson got them on the board by taking a 14-7 decision from Damian Jurmu in the 126-pound bout.

Carlson led the entire match, but Jurmu got within 10-7 on a reversal midway through the second period. Carlson then used an escape and takedown to secure the decision in the final 15 seconds.

The Braves took a 13-12 lead after Nick Laird won by decision over Chad Honkala (15-1) at 138 pounds.

Negaunee regained the lead (18-13) at 144 in which Tallen Parkinson pinned Kristof Stahlman in 1:42.

Nathan Beauchamp (150) then needed just 25 seconds to pin Eli Nicholas, giving the Braves a 19-18 lead.

Nick Proehl pinned Devin Jurmu 3:02 into the 157 bout, extending Gladstone’s lead to 23-12.

The Braves lengthened their lead to 30-18 when Jack Taylor (165) won by technical fall (16-1) over Avery Rautiola.

Tanner Thorbahn (175) then pinned Lux Harris at 1:19, helping the Braves gain a 36-18 advantage before taking the last four bouts by forfeit.

The Miners, making their first regional appearance in 35 years, took a forfeit at 113 and Evan Asikainen gave them their early 12-point lead by pinning Drew Baldovsky in 78 seconds.

“Winning the district was very exciting,” first-year Miners’ coach Asikainen said. “We had a game plan and it came through. We knew what we were up against tonight, but I thought the kids showed up. Evan really wrestled well and Damian improved from the previous from the last time he wrestled him (Carlson). We aborted 106 to try to get more favorable match-ups. For a young team we definitely looked good. Fourteen of us are new this year.”

Both teams resume in today’s individual regional at Boyne City.
