Escanaba Hawks 14U-AA falls in district action

MARQUETTE — The Escanaba Hawks 14U-AA teams dream of a state tournament appearance came to an end on Saturday with an overtime loss to Marquette that eliminated the Hawks.
In Fridays game the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association (CCJHA) defeated the Hawks 9-0. Ridge Kero amd Tobin Markham each had a pair of goals in the contest and goalie Blake Helminen allowed no goals.
The Hawks had 7 penalties for a total of 17 minutes and resulted in three power-play goals.
The Hawks came out Saturday morning looking to bounce back Marquette was first on the board as Jacob Mattila made a nice shot to score a goal and put Marquette up 1-0.
The Hawks responded with three straight goals as Jayce Braun, Dallin Fisher and Vincent DeSalvo-Dougie each had unassisted goals to put the Hawks up 3-1. Marquette’s Alex Renfors found the back of the net with with 11:04 to go in the third period to cut the deficit to 3-2.
With 5:00 to go in the game Hawks forward Garrett Lanaville scored off assists by Bauer Marcotte and DeSalvo-Bougie to extend the lead to 4-2.
Marquette’s Cooper Chapman and Levi Pond each had a goal to tie the game at four and send it to overime where Liam Wenz scored on breakaway with 5:32 left in overtime to seal the win for Marquette.
The Hawks were able to get a taste of success this weekend however as they defeated Calumet in their third game of the weekend.
Calumet’s Jack King scored the first goal of the game but the Hawks responded with a pair of goals by Braun and DeSalvo-Bougie to put the Hawks up 2-1. Calumet tied it at two with 5:39 to go in the second period on a goal by Robert Pennala.
Fisher scored for the Hawks with 11:13 to go in the game to put the Hawks up 3-2. With 8:22 to go in the game Blake Hyrkas scored to tie the game at three. Marcotte and Fisher added goals to put the Hawks up 5-3.
Calumet scored again with 2:25 left to play as Axl Bracco scored to cut the deficit to 5-4 but that is where it would end for Calumet as the Hawks held on for the win.
