STEPHENSON — Two schools came together for a good cause here Tuesday as the Bark River-Harris Broncos split a girls and boys doubleheader and raised funds for the U.P. Honor Flight. The Broncos won the girls game 53-41 and the Stephenson boys picked up a 62-56 win.
The Bark River-Harris girls wasted no time as they jumped out to an early 10-2 lead highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers junior Emma Zawada who finished with 13 on the night.
Broncos senior Julia Nault had 17 points with eight of them coming in the second quarter.
“We focusing on getting a lot of ball movement and getting better shots,” Nault said. I think our team executed really well in that and that is something we have been putting a lot of time and effort into during practice.”
The Broncos picked up right where they left off in the third quarter as Dakota Bridges and Alana Nault each hit a 3-pointer and the Broncos led 43-34 after three quarters of play.
“We played well on the defensive side of the ball,” Broncos coach Paige Welch said. “We have too take better care off the basketball we had too many mistakes on offense that we need to clean up as districts approach.”
In the boys game, the Eagles jumped out to an early 8-3 lead as senior Asher pPriebe drove to the basket for the layup and drew the foul resulting in a three-point play to put the Eagles up 8-3. After a basket by Broncos senior Grant Gholston cut the deficit to 8-5 Lucas Havelka and Priebe each had a layup to extend the Eagles lead to 12-5. junior Nate Klein provided the spark for the Eagles in the second half as he connected on a pair of 3-pointers and finished hitting four on the night and racking up 17 points.
The Eagles came out in the third quarter on a 7-2 run as Klein connected from downtown and Priebe scored on a pair of layups and led the Eagles in scoring with 18 points.
“It felt great to get back on track,” Priebe said. “We have been struggling the past three games and this win definitely gives us a nice boost in confidence going forward.”
Broncos junior Gionni McDonough scored 10 of his team-high 25 points in the third quarter and junior Gabe Spear hit a mid-range jumper to cut the deficit to 48-44 but the Eagles answered with an 8-0 run and never looked back.
“It feat good to get this one against Bark River,” Eagles coach Christian Londo said. “We have struggled the past three games and tonight we looked better but we still have some things to tidy up.”
The Broncos return to action tonight as they host Escanaba while Stephenson travels to Mid Peninsula.
