GLADSTONE — The Gladstone wrestlers cleared their first post-season hurdle, claiming their 17th consecutive district title by defeating Boyne City 52-30 and Cheboygan 77-6 here Wednesday night.
Gladstone’s strength in the upper weight classes proved to be the difference against the Ramblers prior to making short work of Cheboygan.
“Boyne City has a solid team,” Gladstone coach Ryan Harrenstein said. “Although we left a couple matches out there we should have won. We can’t do that in the regional. We knew where they were good, but our guys from 165 pounds to heavyweight are a lock. They don’t lose very often.”
The Braves host the team regional Wednesday, facing Negaunee in the opener at 5 p.m.
“It feels very good to be moving on,” Braves’ freshman Isla Gomez said. “It’s pretty exciting.”
Gomez pinned Boyne City’s LaKenzie Barber 71 seconds into the 106-pound bout, giving the Braves an insurmountable 46-12 advantage.
“She made a mistake and I took advantage,” Gomez added. “This helps me for the regional for girls and get a higher seeding (Sunday at Grayling).”
Junior Nick Laird got the Braves started on the right foot, winning by technical fall (16-0) over the Ramblers’ Kenzee Couturion, then pinned Cheboygan’s Connor Abernathy in 72 seconds at 138 pounds.
“I wanted the pin in the first match,” he said. “She didn’t want to get pinned. I had a half (Nelson) going when they (officials) ended up calling it. This is pretty much the second time I won at home. This does bring up my confidence. It’s great to get support from my family and friends. It’s nice when they can come and cheer me on.”
The Ramblers took a 12-11 lead Bruyn Hauger pinned Nick Proehl 2:45 into the 157 match.
Gladstone regained the lead at 165 in which Jack Taylor pinned Toby Bristal in 3:35.
Tanner Thorbahn (175) extended Gladstone’s cushion to 23-12 by pinning Caleb Daniels in just 28 seconds.
Ryder Forvilly (190) beat Finn Brennan by technical fall (16-0) and Trevor Thorbahn (215) pinned Jeremy Stout in 1:21 for a 34-12 advantage.
Gladstone’s advantage grew to 40-12 after Ben Wilson pinned Kaiden Schoolcraft 1:52 into the 285 match prior to Gomez’s victory at 106.
The Braves quickly took charge against Cheboygan, winning by forfeit in the first two weight divisions and Nathan Beauchamp (157) pinning Oakley Ross in just seven seconds for an 18-0 cushion.
Gladstone led 65-0 after Drew Baldovski won by technical fall over Nickolas Michael at 120 pounds.
The Chiefs got on the board at 126 in which Evan Frodette pinned Gabe Carlson in 2:54.
Next up for the Gladstone boys is a trip to Grayling for Saturday’s individual district.
“At the individual district you have guys trying to punch their ticket to the regionals,” Harrenstein said. “Wrestling teaches you all about yourself. Having home mat advantage is a big deal in the team districts and regionals.”
