RAPID RIVER — A 28-point night from senior Brayden Derouin was too much for Rapid River as the Broncos stampeded to a 63-50 victory here Thursday.

“This was a good game for us coming off a couple of losses,” Derouin said. “Getting this win feels good because it gets us back in the rhythm and hopefully we can build on this going forward.”

Derouin came out on fire scoring the first nine points for the Broncos as he hit a mid-range jumper and a 3-pointer to put the Broncos up 5-0. After the Rockets cut the deficit to 5-4, Derouin knocked down a pair of free throws and drove to the basket for a layup to extend the Broncos lead to 9-4. Later in the quarter Derouin hit another3-pointer to put the Broncos up 16-8. Derouin had 12 of his 28 points in the first stanza.

Broncos junior Gionni McDonough scored the Broncos first eight points of the second quarter to put the Broncos up 27-21. The Broncos went into the half with a 32-23 lead.

“We didn’t shoot the ball as well as we did the first time we played them,” Broncos coach Nicholas Lippens said. “Brayden did a super phenomenal job on defense tonight and I could not be more proud of his effort tonight.”

The Broncos opened the second half on a 7-2 run with Derouin scoring all seven Bronco points to take a 39-25 lead. Ben Knauf added six points during an 8-0 run to extend the Broncos lead to 47-27.

Brennan Kee knocked down four fourth quarter three’s with the second one cutting the Broncos lead to nine but that is as close as they would get.

“It was a tough one tonight,” Rockets coach Brent Lundquist said. “I feel the last couple of games we were the better team we just made too many mistakes.”

Bark River-Harris won the JV game 50-35. The Broncos will be back in action Monday as they travel to Norway and Rapid River will be at Superior Central Friday.
