NORWAY — It took all four quarters to decide the winner here Monday night as the Bark River-Harris boys basketball team defeated the Norway Knights 54-53 in a Skyline Central Conference matchup.

Junior Gabe Spear led the way for the Broncos with 15 points including the game-winning layup with :07 remaining.

“It felt good to get this win tonight,” Spear said. “Our program has been on the up recently and a win like this gives us a big boost in our confidence.”

The Broncos came out firing as junior Andy Johnson knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and senior Brayden Derouin hit a mid-range jumper to put the Broncos up 8-2.

The Knights answered with an 11-2 run highlighted by a pair of layups and a pair of free throws by junior Kaleb LaPine who finished with 19 points to put the Knights in front 13-10.

The Knights led 16-14 after one quarter of play. The Broncos opened the second quarter the same way they did in the first quarter, going on a 8-2 run to put the Broncos back up 22-18.

The Broncos closed out the second quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 35-26 lead into the break.

“I feel like we came out with a lot of energy in the first half,” Broncos coach Nicholas Lippens said. “We did a good job of executing on the offensive end and coming up with stops on the defensive end.”

The Broncos came out in the second half and pushed the lead to double figures at 39-28.

The Knights answered with a 16-3 run highlighted by a trio of 3-pointers by Elliott Kraemer to put the Knights back in front 44-42.

“We kind of got a little complacent in the third quarter,” Lippens said. “We let them back in the game credit to Norway. They are a tough team and you know your going to be tested every time you play a team of this caliber.”

Ben Knauf had a layup and a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter and cut the Knights lead to 49-48. LaPine had eight of his 19 points in the fourth quarter including a layup to put them up 53-50.

Broncos senior Remington Steele drove to the basket for a layup to cut the deficit to 53-52. The Knights got a last second shot off that did not fall to send the Broncos home victorious.
