Broncos ground Jets in conference action

HARRIS — A 19-3 third quarter run proved to be the difference here Wednesdat as Bark River-Harris defeated North Central 60-41.

The Broncos started the run with a layup by Ben Knauf to put the Broncos up 29-27. Senior Gionni McDonough hit a 3-pointer and a layup to extend the lead to 34-28Gabe Spear and McDonough also each made a pair of free throws extending the lead to 10 at 38-28. Andrew Johnson drove to the basket for a layup to make it 40-28. After a layupby Jets junior Kaden Malone cut the deficit to 10, Broncos senior Remington Stelle drove to the basket for a layup and Gabe Spear had a pair of baskets to end the run with Broncos up 46-30.

“We played with a lot of energy tonight,” Broncos coach Nicholas Lippens said. “We played very well on defense and did a good job of forcing turovers and converting them into baskets.”

The Broncos had three in double figures as Spear had 15 points and 12 rebounds, Steele finished with 13 points on the night as he started in place of the injured Brayden Derouin and McDonough added 10.

“I knew I had to step up for the bteam,” Steele said. “I feel like I did a good job of keeping us on track and keeping our energy high.”

The Broncos forced 26 North Central turnovers and converted them into 22 points.

“Our defense was big for us toinight,” Spear said. “Defense wins games and we on on a good run and a lot of it is credit to our defense.

Riley Creyens was the only scorer in double figures with 10 for the Jets.

“We had a tough night,” Jets coach Jon Haight said. “Credit to Bark River they did a good job of doing the little things that we didn’t and they played with a lot of energy. We aren’t happy with the way things went tonight but we gotta move on and get ready for our next game.”

The Jets won the JV game 48-39. Hunter Holle led the way for the Jets with 21 points and sophomore Carter Dombrowski had 18 off the bench.

“We wanted to come out and win the game,” Dombrowski said. “We did pretty well but we could have done better.”

The Jets led 23-15 at halftime of the JV game and used that momentum to carry them to the win.

“I think when we play collectively is when we play our best basketball Jets JV coach Mike Malone said. “Whaen we paly really well off the ball that is when those guys get open in space for good shots.”

The Jets return to action tonight as they host Florence and the Broncos return to action Monday as they travel to Munising.
