MENOMINEE — A winter blizzard that dumped over a foot of snow postponed the Gladstone boys basketball game against Marinette from Monday night to Tuesday night but when the teams finally took the floor Gladstone defeated Marinette 41-28. The Braves outscored the Marines 23-5 in the second half.
Marinette took a 23-18 lead into the half when everything fell apart for Marinette Marinette opened the third quarter with a pair of free throws by junior Kaden Ducane.
The Braves then went on a 11-0 run to end the third quarter. After Owen Gereau split a pair of free throws, Teagan Reynolds and Alex Prins each had layups to cut the deficit to 25-23. Gereau hit a mid-range jumper and Will Inghram hit a pair of free throws to put the Braves up 27-25. Tre Brunette drove to the basket for a layup to extend the Braves lead to 29-25.
The Braves defense did not allow the Marines to hit a field goal in the third quarter.
“We started off a little slow tonight,” Braves coach Jake Kiesby said. “We played well on defense. In the second half we got stops on defense and that led to some transition baskets and that is credit to our defense.”
The Braves continued their domination of the second half in the fourth quarter as Ingrham drove in for a layup extending the lead to 31-25. Junior Lonnie Davey scored seven of his 13 points on the night.
Marinette snapped a 13 minute field goal drought as Ducane drove to the basket for a layup to cut the deficit to 37-28.
Kaden Ducane and Max Jacobson led the way for the Marines with nine points each and Conner Eastman added eight.
Lonnie Davey led the way for the Braves with 13 points and Will Ingrham added 10.
