ESCANABA — The Bay College women’ s basketball team reaped the benefits of a balanced attack here Wednesday night, overwhelming Alpena Community College 119-40.

Bay scored eight in double digits, led by freshman guard Jillian Fraser’s career-high 25 points in a reserve role in this MCCAA North Conference outing.

The Bay men also defeated the Lumberjacks 83-69.

Fraser, a St. Ignace graduate, drained 9-of-14 field goals, including 7-of-10 from three-point range.

“I thought it went pretty good,” she said. “Everyone had a good shooting night and Chloe (Seymour) played real good defense. She always hustles on defense.”

Alpena took an early 8-5 lead on a layup by St. Ignace grad Allison Cece.

The Norse, however, led 24-11 after the first quarter and outscored the Lumberjacks 38-3 in the second frame for a 62-14 halftime advantage.

A layup by sophomore guard Lauren Zawada on a pass from Seymour gave the Norse a 32-12 cushion early in the second stanza.

Pickford grad Brooke Portice hit a layup to shave Alpena’s deficit to 32-14.

A 21-foot jump shot by Fraser gave the Norse a 35-14 advantage, signalling the start of a 34-0 run which continued in the third quarter.

Zawada concluded that run on a layup which put the Norse up 66-14 early in the third.

The Lumberjacks finally ended their eight-minute scoring drought on a jumper from the boulevard by sophomore guard Abby Platt.

“We missed a lot of shots early which made it hard to get into our press,” Bay coach James Fassett said. “Once our shots started dropping we were able to get into our press. The second quarter was a big push for us. We have some tough games coming up. They have a couple good players. Number 24 (Portice) is pretty solid and Number four (sophomore guard Saige Flaugher) is fast.”

Fraser sank a 23-foot jumper to end the third quarter and sophomore guard Gracie Kleikamp opened the fourth with an 18-foot jumper from the right baseline.”

Zawada hit 10-of-18 field goals and finished with 23 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals for the Norse who host Delta College Saturday.

“Our defense is pretty intimidating,” she said. “We’re practicing on our rotations. Every team is a challenge and Delta is very athletic. There’s always room for improvement and things to work on. Offensively, our rotation was good, especially in the first half.”

Portice was led by Portice’s 23 points.

“Brooke is a real good player,” Fraser said. “Brooke, Addison (Cullen) and I played in the Gus Macker tournament (in Sault Ste. Marie). I’ve had good shooting in practices. It feels good to finally get a good shooting night in a game. Our communication is pretty good. We know where everybody is on the floor.”

The Norse(15-3 overall, 4-0 league) finished with a 48-35 rebounding advantage. They hit 47-of-102 field goals and 11-of-13 free throws and committed just five turnovers. The Lumberjacks (4-10 overall, 0-4 league) were 15-of-45 from the floor and had 40 miscues.

In the men’s contest, the Norse led 25-22 before freshman guard Mohamed Madey gave them a five-point cushion with a pair of free throws midway through the first half.

The Norse extended their lead to 35-22 on a layup by sophomore forward Taveon Vann on a pass from freshman Adam Page with 5:10 remaining in the first half.

A putback by sophomore guard William Kelley from Florence, Wis. gave the Norse a 40-28 cushion 2:26 before halftime.

Alpena responded with seven unanswered points, closing within 40-35 on a pair of gifters by freshman Gary Reed shortly before the intermission.

Bay (14-4 overall, 3-1 league) extended its lead to 45-35 on a 20-foot set shot from the right wing by freshman Emerson Droubie early in the second half.

The Lumberjacks (1-13 overall, 0-4 league) continued to hang around the neighborhood, trimming their deficit to 50-45 on a set shot from top of the key by freshman Oliver Duthler.

Bay answered with a 13-0 run, gaining 63-45 cushion on a layup by Madey

Freshman point guard Trey Frye III split a pair of free throws to put the Norse up 70-49 with 8:22 remaining.

A pair of free throws by sophomore guard Derian Williams got Alpena within 72-56 with 5:48 left to play.

Bay responded with six unanswered points, gaining an insurmountable 78-56 advantage on Kelley’s 20-foot set shot from the right wing with 3:56 left.

“Taveon played great and Mohamed played really good,” Norse coach Matt Johnson said. “Trey probably played his best game as a point guard. We did a lot of good stuff. I just don’t think we had the energy and enthusiasm to play our best. Defensively, it was not a good enough overall effort. We scored enough points, but we took our foot off the gas. We definitely have to be better on Saturday.”

The Norse (14-4 overall, 3-1 league) finished with a 43-37 rebounding advantage, hit 33-of-71 field goals and had 10 turnovers.

Vann led Bay in scoring with 22 points to go with 11 rebounds. Madey finished with 15 points. Kelley finished with 12 and Droubie had 10.

Freshman guard Gary Reed was Alpena’s leader with 17 points. Duthler contributed 15 points. Williams tallied 14 points and freshman guard/forward Kobe Johnson chipped in with 10 points and four assists.
