Sports Flashback Nov. 30-Dec. 6
Dec. 2, 1970 — Tony VanDamme scored 25 points and grabbed 20 rebounds, leading the Rock Little Giants to a 57-56 basketball triumph over the Rapid River Rockets. Tom Bailey added 11 points. Mark Sigfrids paced the Rockets with 15 points. Sam Johnson tallied 13 and Bob Kaukola and John Deneau had 12 each.
Gary Praznik’s 28 points was enough to lead the Trenary Comets past the Bark River-Harris Broncos 88-68. Dave Mariin collected 25 points and 27 boards and Ken Mills added 12 points. Bob Teal was the leading scorer for BR-H with 24 points. Loren Veeser finished with 23.
Ernie Vanlerberghe rolled this season’s first 300 game in the Escanaba Classic League at Bowl-a-rama Lanes. He added 206 and 199 games for a National Honor Count 705 series.
Dec. 5, 1970 — The Holy Name Crusaders opened their basketball season by rolling past the Manistique Emeralds 87-58. Gary Kleiman and Tom Ness scored 21 points apiece for Holy Name. Joe Harvey chipped in with 12. Jerry Sample led the Emeralds with 20 and Dave Mickelson had 16.
Mark Isaacson hit 22 points in his varsity debut, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Gladstone Braves from dropping a 71-65 decision to the Munising Mustangs. Jerry Erickson tossed in 13. Wayne Marshall scored 12 and Jim Englund had 10 in a reserve role.
Dec. 3, 1975 — Wayne Johnson poured in 28 points as the Gladstone boys opened their basketball season with a 71-62 triumph over the Gwinn Modeltowners. Keith Nelson added 17 and Greg Fleet contributed 11.
The Bark River-Harris Broncos remained unbeaten in four games this season in a 77-50 conquest of Perkins. Alan Cappaert led the Broncos with 20 points. Joe Racicot hit 14. Brian Kleiman scored 13 and Ken Bower had 12. Jamie Depuydt paced the Yellowjackets with 18. Terry Verbrigghe and Mickey Lauscher added 12 apiece.
Dec. 6, 1975 — The Bay de Noc Community College Norsemen dropped a 92-60 basketball decision to Alpena Community College in the opening round of the Escanaba Kiwanis Invitational Small College tournament. Paul Haas led Bay with 16 points and Mark Branstrom and Steve Perry finished with 13 each.
The Escanaba Eskymos dropped a 60-52 decision to the Iron Mountain Mountaineers in Dave Cannon’s coaching debut. Paul Bohn and Mike Smith scored 12 points each for the Eskymos.
Wayne Johnson led Gladstone in scoring for the second straight time, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Braves from dropping a 67-63 decision to the Ironwood Red Devils. Nelson added 11 and Charlie Wnuck contributed 10 off the bench.
