Sports Flashback Dec. 7-13

Dec. 7, 1970 — Ed Benson poured in 33 points to lead the Carney-Nadeau Wolves to 73-62 basketball triumph over National Mine. John Perras added 24 points and 18 rebounds. Dennis Alderton paced the Nats with 27 points.

Dec. 9, 1970 — Ten players broke into the scoring column for the Holy Name Crusaders as they rolled past the Gladstone Braves 85-39. Joe Joran, Tom Ness and Charlie Creten scored 14 points apiece. Dave Maskart added 12 and Dave Lundin and Joe Harvey had 10 each. Bob Prins was Gladstone’s leader with nine.

Loren Veeser tossed in 22 points as the Bark River-Harris Broncos topped the Perkins Yellowjackets 77-69. Bob Teal hit 21. Bob Smith collected 14 and Gary Phillips had 11. Dwayne Coulliard led Perkins with 18. Gary Lauscher scored 12 and Kent Depuydt and Terry Lauscher tallied 11 each.

Dec. 12, 1970 — Tom Kangas scored 26 points to go with 17 rebounds, but it wasn’t quite enough to prevent the Escanaba Eskymos from dropping a 72-70 decision to the Kingsford Flivvers. Mike Cousineau chipped in with 13 points and Doug Howard had 10.

Joe Goin hit 19 points, including four free throws in the second overtime, as the Eben Eagles upset the Rock Little Giants 54-48. Tony VanDamme was Rock’s leader with 15.

Dec. 8, 1975 — Mark Branstrom scored 33 points, leading the Bay de Noc Community College Norsemen to a 101-75 basketball victory over Northwestern Michigan College in the consolation game of the Escanaba Kiwanis Invitational Small College basketball tournament. Bill Pistulka added 14. Steve Perry tossed in 12. Tom Grun hit 11 and Paul Haas had 10.

The Perkins girls remained undefeated in 18 games in a 49-33 conquest of Alanson in a Class D regional final. Lynette Royer led the Yellowjackets with 25 points and Lisa Carlson added 14. Diane Johnson grabbed 18 rebounds and Karen Miller collected 12.

Carney-Nadeau was also crowned regional champion with a 59-52 triumph over the Watersmeet Nimrods. Nance Janofski hit 28 points for the Wolves and Kathy Dravecky paced the Nimrods with 32.

Dec. 11, 1975 — Perkins advanced to the state semifinals, outlasting Carney-Nadeau 54-48 in a quarterfinal contest. Tracy Neurohr tossed in 19 points and Royer added 15 for the Yellowjackets. Janofski and Colleen Moreau scored 15 apiece for the Wolves.

Dec. 13, 1975 — The season ended for Perkins as it dropped a 48-43 decision to Allendale in a semifinal. Royer scored 21 points and Johnson added 11 for the Yellowjackets, who finished 18-1.

Al Cappaert collected 21 points and 15 rebounds, leading the Bark River-Harris boys to an 84-36 triumph over the Eben Eagles. Joe Racicot added 14 points and George Bower had 13. John Seppanen led the Eagles with nine.
