Sports Flashback Dec. 14-20
Dec. 14, 1970 — The Trenary Comets overcame cold shooting in a 65-64 basketball victory over the Chassell Panthers. Dave Mariin led the Comets with 18 points. Gary Praznik added 16. Bill Sandstrom, who hit the game-winner in the final seven seconds, finished with 15 and Al Hager tallied 11.
Dec. 15, 1970 — Chuck Crago of Escanaba rolled a national honor count 704 series at the Bowl-a-rama Lanes. Crago, who bowled the third honor count series in three weeks, hit games of 228, 254 and 222.
Dec. 16, 1970 — The Holy Name Crusaders posted their fourth straight basketball victory in a 63-43 conquest of Stephenson. Joe Joran paced Holy Name with 20 points. Charlie Creten hit 13 and Dave Maskart and Tom Ness scored 11 each.
Loren Veeser scored 27 points as the Bark River-Harris Broncos squeezed past the Eben Eagles 47-46. Joe Goin led the Eagles with 18.
Powers North Central improved to 4-0 in an 81-37 rout of Pembine, Wis. Kurt Ekberg tossed in 18 points to go with 18 rebounds. John Dani added 13 and Lee Vincent finished with 11.
Dec. 19, 1970 — Tom Kangas poured in 32 points and grabbed 21 boards, leading the Escanaba Eskymos past the Menominee Maroons 78-55. Doug Howard scored 20 and Rick Brookes chipped in with 12.
Dave Mickelson drained two free throws with 11 seconds remaining, lifting the Manistique Emeralds to a 67-65 triumph over the Gladstone Braves. Jerry Sample led the Emeralds in scoring with 32 points and Mickelson collected 20. Wayne Marshall and Bob Prins were Gladstone’s leaders with 15 apiece. Jerry Erickson had 13.
Dec. 15, 1975 — The Northern Michigan Wildcats earned the NCAA Division 2 national football title, rallying past Western Kentucky 16-14 in the Camellia Bowl. Iron Mountain graduate Don Awrey scored the game-winner on a 67-yard dash in the third quarter, concluding an improbable comeback season after the Wildcats finished 0-10 in 1974. The Wildcats trailed 14-3 until fellow Iron Mountain grad. Steve Mariucci tossed a 49-yard touchdown pass to Maurice Mitchell, shaving their deficit to 14-10 in the second frame. Awrey rushed for 111 yards on 11 carries.
John Pistulka collected 20 points and 13 rebounds as the Manistique Emeralds posted a 67-58 basketball triumph over the Rudyard Bulldogs. Rick Berger and Jay Ketcik scored 12 each.
Dec. 17, 1975 — Wayne Johnson poured in career-high 33 points and collected 15 rebounds as the Gladstone Braves hung on for a 77-68 victory over the Escanaba Eskymos. Charlie Wnuck added a season-high 20 points and 10 boards and Keith Nelson had 16 points. The Eskymos, who trailed by 23 points in the second quarter, were led by Mike Smith’s 29 points. Mark Beveridge scored 14 in a reserve role and Mike Hirn had 10.
Jamie Depuydt’s 18 points were enough to lead the Perkins Yellowjackets to a 68-57 triumph over the Carney-Nadeau Wolves. Mickey Lauscher and Terry Verbrigghe scored 12 apiece and Kelly Neurohr had 10. Gerald Thiry led the Wolves with 17 and Dan Neece and Bill Hanchek added 10 each.
Dec. 20, 1975 — Ivan Laurin led a balanced scoring attack with 21 points as Carney Dick & Dots edged Carney Frigo Cheese in the Bark River-Harris, Carney-Nadeau, Hermansville and Powers-Spalding Community School Basketball League. Paul Polfus and Ed Benson paced Frigo’s with 19 apiece.
