Maroons take down Broncos in basketball action
HARRIS — Shorthanded Bark River-Harris was unable to keep pace with Menominee in a 68-33 boys’ basketball loss here Friday night.
Menominee, which ran the floor with authority in this non-conference outing, led 46-17 at halftime en route to its fourth straight victory.
The Maroons didn’t turn the ball over until the last two minutes of the second quarter. They finished with seven turnovers and the Broncos had 23 miscues, including 16 in the first half.
“They’re unbelievably good running the floor,” BR-H coach Nick Lippens said. “They had the advantage in transition. They’re probably a team picked to go pretty far in the tournaments. I know we’re shorthanded, but I think we could have given a better effort in the first half.”
Senior guard Brayden Derouin sank a buzzer-beating 20-foot jump shot to bring the Broncos within 20-11 after the first quarter.
Menominee extended its lead to 26-11 on a fast break layup by senior forward Landen Daigneau within the first minute of the second stanza.
BR-H, which had just seven available players, trimmed its deficit to 26-13.
Menominee answered with a 12-0 run, extending its advantage to 38-13 on a layup by sophomore Brody Daigneau midway through the second.
The Broncos trailed 40-17 after Derouin drained a pair of gifters with 3:24 remaining in the second.
Senior forward Nathan Komp, junior Ryder Linsmeier and Brody Daigneau finished the second with layups, giving the Maroons their 29-point halftime advantage.
“I thought our tempo served us well in the first half,” Menominee coach Sam Larson said. “We shared the ball well. We have a group of unselfish guys who are willing to find the open man.”
Derouin hit an eight-foot jumper to open the third quarter.
Menominee, which substituted freely in the second half, responded with 13 unanswered points for a 59-19 advantage late in the third quarter.
“I thought we got a little flat in the second half,” Larson said. “We played some of the younger guys and they played hard. Overall, we’re happy with where we’re at.”
All 11 of Menominee’s available players scored. Senior guard Darrent Butler led the Maroons with 13 points. Classmate Jacob Schultz added 12 and junior guard Talan Woods had 11.
Derouin hit 20 points for the Broncos, who were missing four players.
The Maroons (4-1), who also won the jayvee game 55-28, host Green Bay West in their holiday tournament Dec. 29. The Broncos (1-2) host Carney-Nadeau Jan. 2.
