Manistique and Cheboygan skate to 3-3 tie

MANISTIQUE — Fifty-nine minutes of hockey wasn’t enough to determine a winner here Saturday as the Manistique Emeralds and Cheboygan Chiefs skated to a 3-3 tie.

Manistique appeared to be in position for a breakaway opportunity before losing possession of the puck with 27 seconds left in the overtime.

Manistique carried the play early in the overtime which included a power play opportunity

The young Emeralds, however, were unable to capitalize.

Manistique (0-7-1), comprised mainly of underclassmen, was outshot 42-34.

“This is absolutely a boost for our young team,” Emeralds’ coach Steve Hinkson said. “Speed adjustment is big for us. We have one skating senior. The rebuilding season I think will be a big benefit for the kids.”

Freshman forward Cooper Gady gave the Chiefs (1-5-1) a 1-0 lead from the slot 4:59 into the contest.

Sophomore forward Jarrett Zellar evened the score on a breakaway 14:41 into the opening frame.

The scoring came in rapid fire in the second period as the teams combined for four goals in less than two minutes.

Manistique took its only lead on a rebound by sophomore forward Andrew Coyer 5:21 into the second stanza.

It took Cheboygan just 19 seconds to answer as Gady even the score at 2-2.

Senior defensemen gave the Chiefs a 3-2 lead seven minutes into the second.

Matt Luebkart knotted the contest only 19 seconds later from the low slot.

“I’m happy about the way the guys played,” Cheboygan coach Seth Duncan said. “Credit to Manistique. They always come out and play hard.”

The Chiefs were coming off Friday’s 7-3 triumph over Cadillac.

“Cadillac is no slouch,” Duncan said. “That was a big boost for us. We’re still in a position where it’s a struggle for us to close out games. We have a lot of returners, but also have eight young guys.”

Manistique senior goaltender Jackson Goudreau stopped 39 shots and Cheboygan junior Jackson Bancroft had 31 saves.

Both teams resume Tuesday with the Emeralds visiting Negaunee and the Chiefs traveling to Traverse City to face the Bay Area Reps.
