Landon Weber undefeated in the 126-lb class at Holiday Super Duels
MUNISING — The beauty of high school wrestling is if your team doesn’t win, you still have an opportunity to achieve individual success.
Manistique, with just five available grapplers, finished 0-5 in the Munising Holiday Super Duals here Saturday.
That, however, didn’t stop Landan Weber from going undefeated in the 126-pound class.
Emeralds’ freshman Jack Ziminski also enjoyed some success, posting a 4-1 record at 215.
“Jack is getting better everyday,” Emeralds’ coach Mat Gonzalez said. “He had four pins today which is nice to see from a freshman in a heavyweight class. This was also a real solid outing for Landan. Right now, we’re competing with a small group.”
Menominee edged Munising 257-250 for the team title. They were followed by Ishpeming Westwood 228 and Gwinn 215, all of which were entered in the West Division. Sault Ste. Maried was the East Division leader with 177 points.
Menominee’s Caleb Barstow was selected the tourney’s Outstanding Wrestler.
“A lot of younger kids stepped up and those who normally wrestle for us showed through,” Menominee coach Dave Clarke said. “Caleb had a great day and we had five go undefeated. There was very good competition here today. This was good preparation for the U.P. (Championship) meet which is one of my favorite meets of the year. The Escanaba Elks will be a good one, too. This is a meet the kids like to come to. We’ve seen St. Ignace at some of the other meets, but hadn’t seen some of the other teams from the eastern U.P.”
The Maroons opened with a 66-12 triumph over Newberry, then defeated Rudyard (34-24), St. Ignace (57-18), Manistique (54-21) and Sault Ste. Marie (46-36).
Manistique also fell to Munising (54-18), Norway (24-21), Gwinn (48-23) and Westwood (48-17)
“The girl from Menominee is pretty good,” Ziminski said. “I was trying to pin her and she put up a good fight, then I finally got the pin in the second round. This is really helping me gain some experience.”
Saturday’s meet moved along swiftly and efficiently with matches taking place on four mats throughout the tournament.
Rosters, however, weren’t available for some teams.
Manistique’s David Hytinen also won his match against the Maroons, who like Manistique, are entered in Saturday’s Esky Elks Invite which begins at 10 a.m.
