Gladstone swim team placed second in triangular
MANISTIQUE — The Gladstone swimmers and divers placed second in a triangular meet here Tuesday, finishing behind Kingsford and ahead of Manistique.
Kingsford’s boys edged the Braves 111-104 and Manistique finished with 74 points.
The Kingsford girls scored 146 points, followed by Gladstone 94 and Manistique 58.
“Kingsford has a very good team and they swam very well,” Braves’ coach Tom Desy said. “The boys’ team, for the second meet in a row, was very close to the top. We had a couple boys that did not make the meet, and maybe that would have made the difference. But that’s the way it goes sometimes. The boys swam well with a number of them trying different events than they swam before.”
Freshman Jake Lanaville won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:27.45, edging Kingsford’s Thomas Gibbons by slightly more than a half-second, helped the Braves win the 200 freestyle relay and placed fourth in 100 butterfly (1:14.61), a qualifying time for the Upper Peninsula Finals.
Gladstone freshman Sawyer Potes, who swam in 500 freestyle for the fist time, copped 500 freestyle (7:30.99). Tyler Soderman placed second in the 100 butterfly (1:06.67), just .29 second behind Kingsford’s Bryce Johnson.
Chase Takkunen was runner-up in 100 breaststroke (1:19) and Everett Cole took second in 50 freestyle (27.81) and 100 backstroke (1:15.31), also a U.P. qualifier and part of the winning 200 freestyle relay.
The Braves’ winning relay also included Mason Couvillion and Grady Nelson.
Manistique’s Logan Clauss took boys’ diving with 166.15 points with senior Maya Carlson winning girls’ diving at 139.5.
Gladstone’s Irene Neumeier captured 200 freestyle (2:18.55) and 100 backstroke, both qualifying times and freshman Rayne Martin added firsts in 50 freestyle (30.33) and 100 butterfly (1:25.26).
Bella Lippens was runner-up in 100 freestyle (1:10.76) and Izzy Dykema took third in 200 IM (3:12.74).
Lippens was also part of the winning 200 freestyle relay which included Neumeier, Dykema and Rayne Martin.
“Despite the score, the girls also had a good meet,” Desy said. “Some of the swimmers tried different strokes this meet with good results. Irene gives her best in every meet and it always shows in her finishes. Rayne, despite limited practice time, really had a good swim in both of her events.”
Gladstone hosts Ishpeming-Negaunee today at 4 p.m. at the Northern Lights YMCA in Escanaba and Manistique travels to Rudyard Tuesday.
