Eskymos rout Saginaw Heritage in hockey action
WELLS — Graham Johnson reached the century mark here Saturday, helping the Escanaba Eskymos skate to an 8-0 hockey victory over the Saginaw Heritage Hawks.
The senior left forward scored four times, including his 100th goal which ended the game by the mercy rule 10 minutes, 46 seconds into the third period.
“This feels good,” he said. “We don’t have too many people who did that here. Our power play was working real well.”
Indeed it was as the Eskymos capitalized on all six of their power plays.
The victory enabled them to improve to 8-4 and bounce back from Thursday’s 5-2 loss to Marquette, when it cashed in on 3-of-5 power plays.
“After playing Marquette we knew we had to get back out there and work hard,” Esky coach Andy Johnson said. “We had to get back to being good on the little details, whether it’d be every little detail, getting pucks deep or forechecking hard.”
Graham Johnson scored number 100 on a breakaway from the slot, becoming only the second Esky player to reach the century mark.
Esky assistant coach Levi Wunder holds the school record with 136 goals during his prep career (2012-15).
Johnson’s one-timer from within five feet of the blue line gave Esky a 6-0 advantage 60 seconds into the third frame.
He added his third goal of the afternoon from the right faceoff circle with senior defenseman Owen LaBonte credited with assists on all three goals in the third stanza.
Esky scored twice in the opening frame, then added three goals during a five-minute power play in the second.
Freshman Henry Sholten scored Esky’s third goal on a rebound from the doorstep 5:27 into the second.
LaBonte hit the fourth goal from the left circle just 15 seconds later and Johnson’s first goal from the right circle gave the Eskymos a five-goal cushion at 6:34, forcing the Hawks (1-7) to use their time-out.
“They have a lot of skill,” Hawks’ coach J.J. Bamberger said. “You cannot give up six power play goals. We’re not playing many guys right now. We’re definitely in a funk. We’re not playing hockey the way we should.”
Senior left forward Ben Sands opened the scoring from the right circle just 1:14 into the game.
Sophomore Griffin Johnson added the second goal on a rebound at 13:51.
The Eskymos finished with a 51-10 shots on goal advantage.
“We made a couple adjustments after the first couple power plays,” coach Johnson said. “We moved the puck around and tried to get them out of position. We found our chance and set it up for a good shot.”
Esky senior goaltender Cully Hayes finished with 10 saves and junior Landon Hayward stopped 43 shots for the Hawks.
The Eskymos travel to Alpena this weekend to face Toledo, Oh. St. John Baptist Friday and the host Wildcats Saturday.
“We got a tough schedule,” Graham Johnson said. “We’ve got to be playing our best hockey. We’ll have to bring our A game. We’ll have to come out flying for those games.”
