Eskymo hockey splits weekend games at Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY — Graham Johnson had one of those nights Friday night as he scored four goals as Escanaba defeated Traverse City Central 5-0 before falling 7-0 to Gabriel Richard on Saturday.
Graham Johnson fount the back of the net for the net on the assist by Nolan Bink. Johnson found the back of the net again with :14 to go in the first period on assists by Owen LaBonte and Ben Sands to put the Eskymos up 2-0.
“We came out just trying to play simple hockey Eskymos coach Andy Johnson said. “Graham came out wanting to put the puck in the net and he came up with a lot of puck luck as he was able to put four goals in for us.”
Graham Johnson scored the only goal of the second period as he scored a unassisted goal for the hat trick with 15:04 to go in the period to extend the Eskymos lead to 3-0.
With 13:53 to go in the game Graham Johnson found the back of the net for the fourth time on the night extending the Eskymos lead to 4-0.
“It felt good to score four goals,” Graham Johnson said. “We played well as a team and Culley was big for us in the net and it was great to get the win.”
Henry Sholten capped off the scoring with 10:09 to play in the contest.
On Saturday, Gabriel Richard was too much for the Eskymos. Connor Forester got the first goal of the game for Gabriel Richard with 3:15 to go in the first period to put the Pioneers up 1-0. Matthew Hillock found the back of the net with 14:13 to go in the second period to extend the lead to 2-0. Michael Taucher scored back-to-back goals extending the lead to 4-0.
The Eskymos out shot the Pioneers 26-24 but were not able to get the puck in the net.
“They had all the puck luck on Saturday,” Andy Johnson said. “I feel like we played well on defense and our level of play was not what the final score showed.”
The Eskymos will be back in action Friday as they host Calumet.
