GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Braves overcame a slow start, defeating the Munising Mustangs 54-30 and Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils in a double-dual wrestling meet here Wednesday night.

Sault topped Ishpeming Westwood 42-35 in its opener and the Patriots then edged Munising 35-30.

“We were kind of sleepy against Munising,” Braves’ coach Ryan Harrenstein said. “Although, their kids wrestled very hard which is what we wanted to see.”

The Braves led Munising 30-18 after Nate Beauchamp pinned Orrin Shalen 84 seconds into the 150-pound bout.

Munising won the 157 weight class on a forfeit and Brady Johns (165) pinned Nick Proehl in 3:50 to tie the score at 30.

Gladstone regained the lead at 175 pounds in which Jack Taylor pinned Chris Kulik at 1:40.

Tanner Thorbahn, Ryder Forvilly and Ben Wilson added pins in the last three bouts to seal the verdict.

“We can rely on our upper weights,” Harrenstein said. “They’re very strong. We wrestled Tanner tonight and he did just fine and Isla (Gomez) wrestled tough. It’s still early yet. We have a lot of work to do. We absolutely got a good test tonight. Every event is important.”

Gomez (113) pinned Munising’s John Nord in 1:42 and Sault’s Isaac Peabody at 5:35.

Forvilly (215) pinned Munising’s Hudson Rockhill in 46 seconds and Sault’s Levi Jones in 36.

Gladstone’s Jack Taylor (175) took Munising’s Chris Kulik by pin at 1:40 and defeated Sault’s Brady Rondeau by technical fall (18-3) and Tanner Thorbahn (190) then pinned Munising’s Autumn Bentley in 35 seconds and took a 9-3 decision from Sault’s Marc DeWildt.

Westwood’s Nick Christenson (113), Jack Manier (120-26) and Gavin Camero (157) were also double-winners on the mat.

“Our guys performed well,” Westwood coach Dan Carlson said. “We were a little flat in the first meet, then came out with a little more fire and desire in the second one. We have a small team, but the kids wrestle tough. Our next (varsity) meet is the Marquette Challenge (Dec. 20) which gives us a little more time to work on stuff. This will be a good time to work on technique and gain some strength.”

Next up for the Braves are Saturday’s Sault Super Duals.
