Braves earn second place finishes in both ends of triangular

ESCANABA — Gladstone swimming and diving teams placed in the middle of a triangular meet here Thursday.

The Houghton boys edged the Braves 128-112 and third-place Manistique scored 52 points.

Houghton’s girls had 142 points, followed by Gladstone 78 and Manistique 54.

“The meet started a little rough for us as three of our four teams were disqualified for early starts,” Braves’ coach Tom Desy said. “This was our second meet of the year and it showed that we have some things to work on. It was a good, competitive meet for our swimmers. Manistique brought some very fast swimmers and Houghton is a perennial power in swimming. The meet got better after the relays.”

Braves’ freshman Jake Lanaville had a hand in four firsts, taking the boys’ 200-yard individual medley in 2:29.73 and 500 freestyle (5:50.9), both qualifying times for the Upper Peninsula Finals. He also anchored the winning 200 freestyle and helped the 200 medley relays.

Sophomore Everett Cole, also part of the Braves’ 200 medley relay, copped 100 freestyle (1:05.39) and 100 backstroke (1:13.7), a U.P. Finals qualifier.

Senior Tyler Soderman, recovering from an illness, added a first in 100 butterfly (1:07.13) and second in 100 breaststroke (1:20.53), which qualified him for the Finals.

Gladstone senior Irene Neumeier became a double-winner, taking the girls’ 100-yard backstroke race in 1:10.44 and 100 butterfly (1:07.27), also U.P. qualifiers, and freshman Izzy Dykema took 500 freestyle (7:19.87).

Freshman Rayne Martin took second in 200 individual medley (3:08.26) and 100 breaststroke (1:38.32). Sophomore Allison Lesnieski added a second in 200 freestyle (2:42.63) and freshman Bella Lippens was runner-up in 100 freestyle (1:09.92).
