Sports Flashback Nov. 16-22
Nov. 18, 1970 — Joe Goin and Al Seppanen hit 19 points each as the Eben Eagles trimmed the Munising Mustangs 68-44 in a boys’ basketball season opener. Duane Ruska added 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Sam Johnson collected 21 points and 15 boards as the Rapid River Rockets opened with a 65-52 triumph over the Engadine Eagles. Mark Sigfrids and John Deneau scored 15 points apiece.
Nov. 21, 1970 — Tom Kangas scored 34 points and Mike Cousineau tallied 27 as the Escanaba Eskymos squeezed past Marquette 86-85 in their season-opener. Jim Piasecki poured in 39 for Marquette.
Jerry Sample hit 29 points in Manistique’s 67-49 conquest of the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils. Dave Mickelson added 14 for the second straight game. Dave Cooper led Sault with 15 points.
Don Sharkey hit 16 points and Lee Vincent added 15 as the Powers North Central Jets topped the Channing Railroaders 68-62. Jim Fazer and John Dani chipped in with 11 each. Mark Cambray scored 24 for the Railroaders.
Nov. 18, 1975 — Nance Janofski scored 16 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, leading the Carney-Nadeau girls to a 43-23 basketball triumph over the Gladstone Braves. Colleen Moreau added 13 points and Janet Neece contributed 10 points and 10 boards. Karen Linder collected 11 rebounds and Chris Benson had 10. Ann Altese led the Braves with six points.
Steve Fisher tossed in 18 points and Con Yagodzinski added 13 as Stroh’s defeated Perkins Village Inn 60-50 in the Escanaba City League. Tony VanDamme paced Village Inn with 18.
The Perkins boys opened their season with a 63-38 victory over the Ironwood Catholic Ramblers. Jamie Depuydt paced the Yellowjackets with 21 points. Terry Verbrigghe scored 18 points to go with 10 boards. Andy VanDamme also had 10 rebounds.
The Bark River-Harris Broncos overcame a 16-point first-quarter deficit to rally past Powers North Central 76-70. Joe Racicot led the Broncos with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Brian Kleiman and Ken Bower tallied 14 points each, with Kleiman also getting 10 boards. Ken Raiche paced the Jets with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Bernard Kleiman hit 10 of his 14 points in the opening frame. Dave Dupart and Dan O’Neil finished with 10 points apiece.
Nov. 20, 1975 — The Rapid River girls ended their regular season on a positive note in a 41-37 triumph over the North Central Jets. Julie Siering collected 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Rockets. Kathy Doonan and Patty Thibault tallied 10 points each and Christy Addis snagged 15 boards. Judy Bellmore had nine points for the Jets.
Nov. 21, 1975 — The Gladstone girls advanced in the Class B district tournament with a 36-28 victory over the Menominee Maroons. Altese hit 14 points and collected 13 rebounds. Patty Kennedy scored 12 points. Cheryl Conder led the Maroons with 12.
Lynette Royer scored 22 points, leading the Perkins Yellowjackets past the Rock LIttle Giants 50-27 in a Class D opener. Tracy Neurohr added 14 and Lisa Carlson had 10. Renee Kivela had seven points for Rock.
Nov. 22, 1975 — Gail Pistulka’s 19 points and 15 boards were enough to lead the Manistique Emeralds past the Newberry Indians and a Class C district opener. Karen Nortbotten had 12 points.
Mark Branstrom pumped in 24 points, but it wasn’t quite enough to keep the Bay College Norsemen from dropping an 81-79 decision to Bethany Lutheran College of Mankato, Minn. Bill Pistulka hit 16. Steve Perry tallied 14 and Paul Haas had 12.
