HARRIS — Things looked promising for the Bark River-Harris Broncos after the first set of a Division 3 district volleyball opener here Monday night.

Iron Mountain seized the momentum in the second set, however, in a 3-1 (20-25, 25-9, 25-15, 25-19) triumph.

The victory sends the Mountaineers (5-17-1) to Gwinn (10-14-2) for tonight’s semifinal match at 6 p.m. The Broncos finished 5-19-2.

BR-H closed the first set on a return error by the Mountaineers.

“We felt we had momentum,” BR-H coach Brooke Bartley said. “The girls came out with a lot of energy. In the huddle, we talked about pushing the ball into the front and that was working. We felt super energized.”

The Broncos took a 4-3 lead in the second frame on a block by senior middle blocker Kaet Erickson.

Iron Mountain went ahead 5-4 on a service ace by sophomore Monroe Vedin.

The Broncos were within 6-5 before the Mountaineers got a sideout on a kill by junior Ava Marttila.

Iron Mountain extended its lead to 12-5 on another kill by Vedin.

BR-H was still within 14-7 after a kill by sophomore middle blocker Tessa LaFave.

Following a sideout, Vedin served for six straight points, providing the Mountaineers with an insurmountable 21-8 advantage.

“Our rotation helped,” Iron Mountain senior Lucy Baumgartner said. “Once we got the taller girls in front, we felt we could match up with them. It was a fun match. Some of their girls and I are teammates in gymnastics (at BR-H). There was a little bit of communication during the match. It was fun talking with them over the net. I’m looking forward to gymnastics and getting together with them.”

The third set was tied at three after a kill by senior Kaiya Davis.

Iron Mountain responded with five unanswered points, gaining an 8-3 lead on an ace by senior Georgia Mundy.

A kill by senior outside hitter Dakota Bridges brought the Broncos within 10-7.

They were within 18-14 prior to a service error which gave the Mountaineers a sideout.

Iron Mountain then continued to build on its lead prior to ending that set on a kill by junior Emma Bouchard.

“We changed our whole offense which made us stronger,” Mountaineers’ coach Emma Cronkright said. “We moved up a setter and an outside hitter from the jayvees and they were a big part of our game. I thought Bark River-Harris played reasonably well. They were scrappy with everything. We really pulled everything together tonight.”

The fourth set was also tied at three before a kill senior Bella Person gave Iron Mountain a sideout and 4-3 lead.

Bouchard then served for eight consecutive points, a run which ended on two kills and a block by Person for a 12-3 advantage.

BR-H climbed within 16-12 on a Mountaineers’ hitting miscue.

Three straight hitting errors by the Bronlcos, however, allowed Iron Mountain to extend its lead to 19-12.

BR-H shaved its deficit to 20-16 before a kill be person and ace by Bouchard enabled the Mountaineers to extend its lead to 22-16.

The Broncos closed within 24-19 on a kill by Olson prior to committing a service error.

In the opener, Iron Mountain took an 8-3 lead on an ace by senior Whitney SIren.

BR-H surged to a 10-9 lead on an ace by Olson and gained a two-point lead on a return error.

Iron Mountain took a 12-11 lead on a kill by Vedin before Bridges tied the score on a kill of her own.

The score again was tied at 13 before the Mountaineers committed back-to-back lift violation, enabling the Broncos to gain a 15-13 lead.

Iron Mountain was still within 20-19 following an ace by Person.

The Broncos led 23-19 before a kill by Vedin brought the Mountaineers with 23-20.

Iron Mountain, however committed a lift violation and return errors as the Broncos took the first set.
