Forest Park volleyball advances to state quarterfinal

L’ANSE — Crystal Falls Forest Park made quite a statement in a Division 4 volleyball regional final here Thursday night in a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-14) here Thursday night.

The victory sends the Trojans (41-1) to Manistique where they’ll face Atlanta (36-1-2) in a state quarterfinal match Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Hematites finished 23-6-2.

“I didn’t imagine we would win 41 matches this season.” Forest Park coach Bobbie Jo Anderson. “That’s beyond our expectations, although the girls worked hard. The first set definitely set the tone. They were able to relax a little more after winning the first set.”

It was junior Tessa Bartoszek, however, who came up with a key defensive play in the second set.

The Trojans were ahead 14-11 when it appeared the ball would land on their set of the net when Bartoszek somehow kept it from hitting the floor and sent it over the net, resulting in a defensive miscue by the Hematites.

“That was huge,” Anderson said. “Volleyball is a game of momentum and we wanted to keep that on our side.”

The Hematites were still within 19-16 following a kill by senior middle hitter Mya Hemmer.

Back-to-back kills by senior Ava Fischer put the Trojans up by five points and a return error by Ishpeming allowed them to gain a 22-16 advantage.

A hitting miscue enabled Ishpeming to shave its deficit to 22-18.

Fisher then recorded another kill moments before the Trojans secured the set on a four-hit violation by the Hematites.

“We don’t give up,” Bartoszek said. “We took advantage of Mya in the back row. After we lost to Hancock last year, we knew we were going to come back stronger. It’s awesome to be moving on.”

Fischer, showing ability to change speeds on her swings, started the third set with a service ace and Forest Park gained a 7-1 lead on a kill by senior Elsie Williams.

Ishpeming trimmed its deficit to 8-4 on a Trojans’ defensive error.

Forest Park followed with a 7-2 run, which included four kills by Fischer, for a 15-6 cushion.

“We didn’t like the outcome in last year’s regional final,” she said. “It’s absolutely a relief to win this year’s regional. Mya is really a good player. We knew she would have a big swing and a big hit. I think serving around her was the difference. I think that got them off balance and we found the open spots.”

A kill by Hemmer shaved Ishpeming’s deficit to 15-8 before the Trojans surged to an insurmountable 21-8 advantage on a kill by sophomore Evie Anderson.

Ishpeming led 6-2 in the opener prior to Forest Park getting a sideout.

Sophomore Harper Anderson followed with a seven-point service run, helping the Trojans gain a 10-6 lead on a Hematite block which sailed out of bounds.

Hemmer, a Baylor University recruit, recorded a kill to get Ishpeming within 10-8 before Forest Park surged to a 20-12 advantage on a kill by Harper Anderson.

A block by Anderson gave the Hematites a sideout and a kill by Hemmer made it 21-13 before a pair of kills by Fischer and another by Bartoszek all but sealed the first set.

“This is a rough ending, but I think we still had a nice season,” Hemmer said. “We’re a family. We have each other’s back no matter what happens. Their communication was probably the difference. They showed a lot of grit.”
