Eskymos take down Flivvers in season opener

WELLS — The Escanaba Eskymos hockey team took the ice for the first time this season and ran away with a 7-0 triumph over the Kingsford Flivvers here Tuesday. The Eskymos got production from all three scoring lines and senior goalie Culley Hayes stopped all 19 shots in the win.

“I just wanted to keep the puck in front of me,” Hayes said. “The boys made it easy for me tonight I just had to stop the first one. It felt great to get back on the ice we haven’t had a lot of practice but it felt good to get things going.”

The Eskymos scored their first goal with 11:48 to go in the first quarter as Hunter Allen scored off assists by Gunnar LaMarche and Griffin Johnson to put the Eskymos up 1-0.

With 6:03 to go in the first quarter, Ben Sands fired the pass to Griffin Johnson who found Caron Hughes for the second Escanaba goal and with 3:58 to go in the first period Gladstone freshman Henry Sholten took the pass from fellow freshman Chase Korpi and found the back of the net to extend the Eskymos lead to 3-0.

“We saw a lot of good things tonight,” Eskymos coach Andy Johnson said. “We liked our team speed but I feel we were sloppy in some areas but we will clean that up as we go. All three lines contributed tonight and it was a good all-around effort by our guys.”

With 9:36 to go in the second period, Chase Korpi scored his first goal as a Eskymo coming off assists by Jacob Freel and Nolan Bink to extend the lead to 4-0. and with :06 to go in the second period Graham Johnson scored a short-handed goal off assists by Nolan Bink and Owen Labonte to put the Eskymos up 5-0 after two periods of play.

With 12:28 to go in the game Ben Sands found the back of the net off assists by Graham Johnson and Own LaBonte to put the Eskymos up 6-0. Hunter Allen scored his second goal of the game with 6:17 to play coming off assisits by Nolan Bink and Gunnar LaMarche for rthew Eskymos seventh goal of the contest.

“I was in the right spot for my second goal,” Allen said. “The pass was perfect right on the spot and I was able to gewt the shot of quickly and it went in.”

The Eskymos return to action on Friday as they host Traverse City West at 6 p.m.
