Eskymos split pair of weekend games

WELLS — The Escanaba Eskymos split a pair of weekend games as they fell 2-0 to Traverse City West on Friday and rebounded with a 6-0 shutout win over H.H. Dow from Midland on Saturday.

Friday’s Game:

The Titans scored a pair of goals in the second period to earn the win the first goal came with 15:04 to go in the period as Drew Chorland found the back of the net off an assist by Brady Sorenson and it was followed up by a goal by Riley Basile off assists by Hudson Robertson and Robert Councilor.

“We didn’t have a sense of urgency out there tonight,” Eskymos coach Andy Johnson said. “Weren’t jumping the loose pucks I think we had the mindset that we are good and we really needed to be knocked down a step.”

The Titans out shot the Eskymos 25-13 over the the first two periods before the Eskymos out shot the Titans 14-9 in the third period.

Saturday’s Game:

The Eskymos got on the board early on Saturday as Graham Johnson found the back of the net with 14:18 to go in the first period to put the Eskymos up 1-0. With 12:53 to go in the first period Nolan Bink scored a short-handed goal to extend the Eskymos lead to 2-0.

“Unfortunately we had to have that little wake up moment against Traverse City West,” Andy Johnson said. “Our boys took that to heart and came out today playing the way we know they can. We played fast got pucks deep and it worked out for us tonight.”

With 4:22 to go in the first period freshman Chase Korpi took the pass from fellow freshman Henry Sholten and foun the back of the net to extend the Eskymos lead to 3-0.

“It feels pretty good,” Korpi said. “The team has been playing well and Culley has been solid for us in the net.”

Graham Johnson scored his second goal of the game with 1:54 to go in the second period and with 11:40 to go in the game Graham Johnson scored on the power play to complete the hat-trick and put the Eskymos up 5-0.

“On the power-play goal grffin set a nice screen in front of the net and it tipped off one of their players and I put it in for the goal.” Johnson said.

The Eskymos added on a goal with 6:15 to go as Sholten scored to put Esky up 6-0.

The Eskymos will be back in action Tuesday as they face Jeffers at Michigan Tech University.
