Broncos rout Wykons in playoffs opener

HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris Broncos had no trouble with the West Iron County Wykons as they rushed for 416 yards in a 54-6 triumph here Friday.
The Wykons were first on the board as junior Nathan Camps connected with senior Jacob Goriesky for a 46-yard touchdown pass to put the Wykons up 6-0.
The Broncos answered with a 18-yard TD run by junior Gionni McDonough, the two-point conversion was good and the Broncos led 8-6. On the ensuing kickoff the Broncos recovered the onside kick and took it 45 yards to the house extending the lead to 16-6.
“That may have been an error,” Broncos coach Caleb Adams said. I’m not sure if your allowed to return an onside so we may have got a way with one there.”
With 4:15 to go in the first half, junior Ben Knauf took the ball to the left and went 40 yards to the house extending the Broncos lead to 22-6.
“We played very well tonight,” Adams said. “We had a mistake in our coverage on the touchdown play but did a good job overall.”
With 11:54 to go in the first half, Andy Johnson scored on a 12-yard TD run to put the Broncos up 30-6
Late in the half, after a turnover on downs the Broncos took the ball 93 yards on seven plays capping off the drive on a 10-yard RD run by McDonough.
Ethan Oswald and Andy Johnson each had over 100 yards rushing in the contest.
The Broncos host Iron Mountain Friday and that will make them the only team in MHSAA history to play two playoff games against teams they played twice this season.
“We are excited for the game next week,” Broncos quarterback Dane Schmitt said. “We have put on a lot of practice and everyone is buying into what the coaches are calling for us.”
