Bay College splits doubleheader with Oakland Community College

ESCANABA The Bay College Norse split a men’s and women’s doubleheader here Friday as the women won 123-67 while the men fell for the first time this season 75-68.
The Women wasted no time as they jumped out to a 35-8 lead after one quarter behind 10 first quarter points from sophomore Lauren Zawada. Zawada had 27 points to go along with nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Lauren is a very smart player,” Norse women’s coach James Fassett said. “She is an explosive player and once she gets going she is hard to stop.”
Norse sophomore Makenna Hendrickson connected on a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 38-8. Addison Cullen added a layup to extend the lead to 42-8.
The Norse took a 70-26 lead into the half and never looked back. Along with Zawada the Norse had four other players in double figures including Jillian Fraser who had 19 points, Makenna Hendrickson added 17 points, Addison Cullen had 12 points and Addison Cullen had 11.
In the men’s game, the Norse jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on a 3-pointer by Ziad Abouali but the owls quickly evened the score on a 3-pointer by Aaron Chapman.
Bay sophomore William Kelley hit a pair of free throws on a technical foul on Chapman then drove to the basket on the ensuing possession for a layup to put the Norse up 7-3. The Norse scored six of the next eight points to extend the lead to 15-7.
The Norse held on to take a 41-35 lead into the halftime break. Braeden Holder scored the first five points of the second half including knocking down a 3-pointer from the wing to cut the deficit to 41-40.
Trey Frye responded with back-to-back baskets to put the Norse back in front 45-40.
The Owls took the lead at 53-51 with 10:18 to go in the game on a 3-pointer by Holder and would not trail again in the contest.
“We know we can compete with the top teams. Norse men’s coach Matt Johnson said. “The best team won tonight. We couldn’t hit shots and that hurt us down the stretch.”
Bay was led by Taveon Vann with 15 p[oints an 10 rebounds. William Kelly had 12 points in the loss.
