Sports Flashback Oct. 19-25

Oct. 20, 1980 — The Rapid River Rockets celebrated homecoming with a 21-6 football victory over the Bark River-Harris Broncos. Kirby McCarty led the Rockets in rushing with 88 yards, including a four-yard touchdown, on 19 carries and Craig Moser hit 7-of-14 passes for 120 yards, including TDs of 34 and 47 yards to Bill Schram. Mike Urbanc scored on a one-yard run for BR-H.

Oct. 21, 1980 — Belinda Kutzera scored 18 points, leading the Gladstone girls to a 66-60 basketball triumph over the Stephenson Eagles. Patti Trotter added 13 points and five assists and Leana Rouker hit 12 points.

Oct. 24, 1980 — The Escanaba Eskymos avoided an upset by defeating the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils 74-65 in overtime. Shelly Livermore led Esky with 19 points. Michelle Hall added 18. Jeanne Courneene tallied 15. Chris Martin tossed in 12 and Sandy Davison finished with 10.

Anne Stein collected a career-high 28 points and 16 rebounds as the Powers North Central Jets topped the Republic-Michigamme Hawks 57-50. Patti O’Neil and Lori Wentland hit nine points apiece and Richelle Barker grabbed 14 boards.

Oct. 25, 1980 — Escanaba captured its third straight Great Northern Conference football title in a 19-12 triumph over Marquette. Greg St. Onge ran for two TDs and Dick Severinsen tossed a 12-yard pass to Dean Altobelli for another score.

BR-H finished with a victory over the first time in three years, winning 8-0 at Laona, Wis. Mike Urbanc scored on a seven-yard run, set up on a 40-yard pass from Dave Beauchamp to John Erickson.

Oct. 19, 1985 — The Gladstone Braves kept their playoff hopes alive with a 26-6 triumph over the Kingsford Flivvers. Paul Trudeau scored on a six and four-yard runs. Brian Pelon added a score on quarterback sneak and R. Troy Carlson, who ran 22 times for 97 yards, added a four-yard TD.

Todd LaCosse bounced and sprinted 67 yards for TD, helping Esky rally past the Cheboygan Chiefs at homecoming. Paul Rodman tossed a 24-yard TD pass to Todd Zeise and Troy Gough booted a 27-yard field goal for the Eskymos, who overcame a 14-0 deficit and ended a two-game losing streak.

Oct. 21, 1985 — Escanaba’s Dan Beaudry captured the Upper Peninsula Class A-B boys’ individual title at the Gladstone Golf Club, covering the 3.1-mile course in 15:39.36, followed by Marquette’s Geoff Osowski and Gladstone’s Jay Richer.

Esky’s Lorraine Boucher was a surprise winning in the girls’ race, earning her first victory this season at 18:54.77.

The Marquette boys won with 40 points and Gladstone edge Esky 68-69 for the runner-up trophy and the Marquette girls took top honors with 21 points, followed by Esky 78 and Menominee 80.

Ron Kleiman scored on a 32-yard hook-and-ladder play, lifting Bark River-Harris past Rock Mid Peninsula 8-6. Mid Pen’s Marc Arts snapped a scoreless deadlock on a 40-yard interception return in the third quarter.
