Sports Flashback Oct. 12-18
Oct. 12, 1970 — Gary Young ran for 105 yards and scored three touchdowns, leading the Gladstone Braves to a 25-0 football triumph over the Munising Mustangs. Young scored on runs of 23 and four yards. Bob Prins completed a TD pass to Young for 37 yards and Keith Demeuse for 40. Jim Grey led the Mustangs in rushing with 114 yards in 17 attempts.
Lee Vincent, Jim Gaber and Greg St. Juliana scored two TDs apiece, leading the Powers North Central Jets in a 56-8 rout of Rock. Don Sharkey, Daryl Beauchamp and John Faccio each had a TD. Greg Westlund scored on a 20-yard run for the Little Giants.
Oct. 13, 1970 — Maurice Simmons set a course record while leading the Escanaba Eskymos to a 19-38 cross country victory over the Marinette Marines. Simmons, who covered the two-mile course in 10:58, was followed by teammate Steve Gage. Esky’s Dave Ries placed fourth and Marty Anderson was fifth.
Oct. 17, 1970 — Tom Kangas hit field goals of 24 and 23 yards, helping Esky earn a 20-12 football victory over Marinette. Bill Suriano scored on an 18-yard run and Rich Miketinac scored the game-winner on a quarterback sneak in the final 24 seconds.
The Manistique Emeralds overcame an early 16-point deficit to upend the Newberry Indians 22-16. An eight-yard pass from Kendall Neeson to Dave Mickelson got the Emeralds on the board in the second quarter. They tied the score on Neil Hubble’s two-yard run in the third stanza and scored the game-winner on Neeson’s 17-yard aerial to Jerry Arnold in the fourth.
Oct. 13, 1980 — The Marquette boys were crowned Great Northern Conference cross country champs with 21 points. They were followed by defending champion Menominee 58, West Iron County 91, Escanaba 98 and Gladstone 102. Marquette’s John Kingston won the three-mile race at the Gladstone Golf Club in 16:24. Esky’s Jim Harris was runner-up and Menominee’s Steve Ostrenga placed ninth. Mike LaPine was Gladstone’s leader in 15th.
The girls ran individually with Marquette taking the top seven places, followed by Gladstone’s Shari Ahola. Kyran Smith was the winner at 19:26.
Kirby McCarty ran for 122 yards, including a 53-yard TD in 19 carries, as the Rapid River Rockets posted a 21-7 football triumph over the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears. Mike Lee scored on a three-yard run and Mike Maggart turned a fumble recovery into a 45-yard TD. Big Bay quarterback Charlie Tatrow hit 13-of-23 passes for 114 yards and scored on a one-yard run.
The Trenary girls failed to score in the third quarter while dropping a 37-31 basketball decision to the Chassell Panthers. Pam Michael hit 16 points and Rhonda Ellis grabbed 10 rebounds for the Comets.
Oct. 15, 1980 — The Escanaba Eskymos scored five in double digits in a 67-42 conquest of Gladstone. Esky’s Shelly Livermore collected 14 points and 13 rebounds. Jeanne Courneene and Chris Martin also scored 14 points. Sandy Davision tallied 13 points and 12 boards and Michelle Hall finished with 10 points. Belinda Kutzera led the Braves with 11 points and Leanna Rouker had 12 rebounds.
Oct. 16, 1980 — The Marquette won again at the Gladstone Golf Club, taking the Upper Peninsula Class A-B cross country title with 25 points, followed by Menominee 68, Gwinn 92, Gladstone 123 and Esky 131. Marquette’s Al LaFountain won this time at 15:55, followed by Kingston and Harris.
The Marquette girls scored a perfect 15 points, followed by Calumet 63, Gwinn 73, Gladstone 96 and Esky 123. Marquette’s Kara Braak set a course record in 19:10 and Ahola placed seventh. Jean Palequin was Esky’s pacesetter in 16th.
Big Bay de Noc’s Evie Dalgord placed ninth in girls’ Class C-D and Bill LaTulip did likewise in boys’ Class D.
Oct. 18, 1980 — The Powers North Central Jets captured the Border Lakes Conference title in a 39-18 football victory over Crystal Falls Forest Park. North Central’s Brian Hilsabeck rushed 30 times for 210 yards and three TDs. Greg Maule added 131 yards and two TDs on 16 carries. Jeff Poquette scored on an 87-yard kickoff return.
