Norse defeat Pioneers in four sets

ESCANABA — A strong well-rounded effort from sophomore Mia Hauser helped Bay College volleyball to a four-set victory (24-26, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23) over Delta College here Wednesday.

“It was a really fun game tonight,” Hauser said. “My mindset during serving was to keep it in and stay calm and trust my teammates.”

The Norse jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first set highlighted by a pair of aces by freshman Hope Varoni who had four on the night.

The Pioneers scored back-to-back points to cut the deficit to one.

The Norse extended the lead back to three on a kill by freshman Ava Maki who finished the night with 10 kills to go along with two aces and a block.

The Pioneers pulled within one at 7-6 but Maki went on a three-point scoring run including an ace to put the Norse up 11-6.

The Pioneers tied the game at 16 on a kill by Charlotte Fournier and again at 17 on a violation by the Norse.

Delta College took the lead at 19-18 on a kill by Alexis Champagne. The Norse tied the set at 24 late but the Pioneers answered with back-to-back points to take the first set.

The Norse scored the first two points of the second set to take an early lead. The Pioneers quickly tied the game then took the lead on a kill by Fournier.

The Norse tied the game at three on a kill by Maki, then took the lead on a violation by the Pioneers. Maki extended the Norse lead to 5-3 on a well placed kill just inside the line.

The set was tied on five occasions with the Norse taking a 14-13 lead on a kill by freshman Lydia Schaal.

“It was the same kind of match when we played at their place,” Bay coach Dan Porath said. That game went five sets so we knew this match would be tight.”

The Norse scored 10 of the next 15 points to take the second set.

The Norse took the lead to start the first set on an ace by Varoni. Bay extended the lead to 5-2 on a kill by freshman Ava Johnson. The Norse took their largest lead of the set at 10-6 on a kill by Hauser. The Norse scored four of the last five points of the third set highlighted by a pair of aces by Hauser to close out the set.

“Mia was huge for us in that third set,” Porath said. “I feel like if we would have let that set slip away it would have been tough to come back from so the pace at the end of that third set was huge,”

The Norse started the fourth set just like the first three sets taking the early lead at 1-0. The match was tied on ten occasions with six lead changes. The Norse had a five-point scoring run to take a 16-12 lead highlighted by a pair of aces by sophomore Jade Jasenovsky.

Jasenovsky comes off of her MCCAA Defensive Player of the Week Award with 44 digs and 90.9 receiving percentage.

Delta answered with a five-point scoring run to tie the game at 19 and took the lead 22-21 on an ace by Champagne but could not close it out as they dropped the third straight set.

Ava Maki finished the night with 10 kills, three aces and one block. Haylee Gatien had eight kills and three blocks and Addie Morton had Six kills and four blocks.

The Norse will host Gogebic Community College Monday.
