Nordics spoil Cougars homecoming

EBEN JUNCTION — It was homecoming at Superior Central Saturday, but it was Felch North Dickinson which climbed into the driver’s seat early in this regular-season finale.

The Nordics, who completed their regular season at 9-0 overall, scored three times in the first quarter en route to a 56-14 football triumph over the Cougars.

“It’s a wonderful feeling,” Nordics’ coach Mike Christian said. “We’re a very complete team. For us it’s having six guys who don’t have to go both ways. Our depth is pretty good.”

The Cougars (3-6) fumbled the opening kickoff, allowing the Nordics to gain possession on their 27-yard line on this sunny and seasonably cool afternoon.

It took the Nordics less than two minutes to find the end zone on a 14-yard pass from senior Brady Jungwirth to junior Trenton Kramer for a 6-0 lead.

Sophomore Toby Fleming made it 12-0 on a 34-yard run off right tackle and junior Jason Graham gave the Nordics their 20-point cushion on a 59-yard dash through the middle.

The Nordics struck again early with 8:25 left in the second stanza on Jungwirth’s 58-yard bomb to Fleming for a 28-0 advantage.

Superior Central got on the board just 15 seconds later on junior QB Will Spranger’s 54-yard aerial to the left side to junior tight end Eli Valima.

North Dickinson answered just 34 seconds later on Graham’s eight-yard run up the middle to make it 36-6.

The Nordics increased their advantage to 44-6 on Jungwirth’s eight-yard pass to senior Ty King with 24.4 seconds remaining before the intermission.

“They’re a good team,” Cougars’ coach Todd Spraner said. “I think they’ll do well in the playoffs. Our offensive linemen did a nice job protecting our quarterback. They have talent all around and size.”

North Dickinson controlled the ball most of the third frame, gaining a 50-6 advantage on Jungwirth’s three-yard pass to Kramer.

The Cougars responded early in the fourth, trimming their deficit to 50-14 on junior Will Spranger’s two-yard run up the middle.

North Dickinson concluded the scoring on an 18-yard run around right end by freshman Scott Losee with 3:35 left to play.

Graham led the Nordics in rushing with 121 yards on nine carries and Fleming, who played with a sprained thumb, added 60 in eight attempts.

“Jason is as hard-nosed and explosive as they come,” Christian said. “This was Coby’s first game at running back. He was very efficient and a bright spot for us. He stepped up and played more like a junior or senior.”

Junior running back Aidan Korpi led the Cougars in rushing with 60 yards on seven carries and classmate Gavin Vining added 58 in 10 trips.

“We have 11 juniors,” coach Spranger said. “These guys are coming back. We’re looking forward to seeing them get faster and stronger. We’re disappointed in our record, but not the effort. The guys played hard all year.”

It appears the Nordics will host St. Ignace (6-3) in the opening round of the Division 2 playoffs.
