Flashback Oct. 5-11
Oct. 5, 1960 — The Rapid River Rockets won their own invitational cross country meet with 22 points. They were followed by Vulcan 45, Escanaba 74 and Nahma 92. Rapid River’s Dwight Harwood earned top individual honors, covering the two-mile course in 10:32, followed by teammates Paul Olson and Wayne Koski.
Oct. 8, 1960 — The Manistique Emeralds unleashed a potent ground attack in a 34-0 football victory over the Gladstone Braves. The Emeralds, led by halfbacks Jim Malloch and John Pelon and fullback Ron Snyder rushed for 313 yards. Malloch ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Pelon added 92 yards and two TDs in 15 attempts and Snyder had 44 yards in nine trips.
The Bark River-Harris Broncos clinched at least a share of the Wolverine Conference title in a 14-6 triumph over the Rock Little Giants. Ken Belanger scored on a quarterback sneak and John Martin added a one-yard TD run for the Broncos. Rock got its TD on Tom Sharkey’s pass to Russell Dees.
Oct. 10, 1960 — The Escanaba Eskymos dominated in every phase in a 26-7 victory over the previously undefeated Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils. Halfback Lionel Beaumier led Esky’s ground attack with 108 yards on 14 carries. John Fisher added 65 yards and Bill Carlson had 61, including a 27-yard TD run. Fisher scored from seven yards out. Phil Davidson added another score on a 31-yard interception return and Carlson completed a seven-yard pass to Tom Butler for Esky’s fourth TD.
Oct. 9, 1965 — The Escanaba Holy Name Crusaders snapped a four-game losing streak with a 6-0 football triumph over the Manistique Emeralds. Bob Bricco, who rushed for 86 yards, scored the lone TD on a 10-yard run. Bob Fodor added 66 yards and John Lark, Tom Menard and Dale Shandonay had interceptions. Doug Nelson led the Emeralds in rushing with 60 yards. Jerry Belleville finished with 51 yards and had a pass interception.
Oct. 11, 1965 — A strong second half helped the Gladstone Braves post a 38-12 victory over the Marquette Bishop Baraga Royals. Tom Stade rushed for 139 yards, including 18-yard TD. Braves’ quarterback Mark Goodman tossed a 51-yard TD pass to Keith Apelgren and returned a pass interception 45 yards for another score. Gary Larson scored on a pair of three-yard runs and Dick Frisk added a two-yard TD run.
Dave Smith ran for two TDs and passed for another, leading the Powers-Spalding Tigers in a 40-0 rout of Pembine, Wis. Tom Pipkorn scored on an 11-yard interception and Mike Folcik added a one-yard TD run.
