Broncos trample Wykons on homecoming night

HARRIS — Bark River-Harris rushed for just shy of 250 yards on the ground and 431 total yards in a 44-7 Homecoming victory over West Iron County here Friday.

The Broncos opened the game recovering an onside kick, and quickly drove the ball down the field with junior Andrew Johnson running it in from seven yards out to put the Broncos up 8-0.

On the ensuing kickoff the Broncos successfully recovered another onside kick. The drive was capped off by a 44-yard touchdown pass from Dane Schmitt to senior Gionni McDonough extending the Broncos lead to 16-0.

“We were just trying to break some tendencies,” Schmitt said. “We have been throwing the ball a little more in practice and it worked well for us tonight.”

The Broncos found their way back to the endzone with 10:39 to go in the second quarter om a seven-yard burst up the middle by McDonough extending the Broncos lead to 22-0.

“We didn’t want a homecoming letdown,” McDonough said. “We came into this game wanting to keep our energy level high and we did a good job of that tonight.”

With 9:32 to go in the first half McDonough went off left tackle from two-yards out extending the Broncos lead to 30-0.

With 3:45 to go in the first half McDonough took in in from six yards out to put the Broncos up 38-0 at the half. McDonough finished the game with eight carries for 68 yards and three TDs on the ground as well as two catches for 57 yards and one TD.

With 1:52 to go in the third quarter, junior Gabe Spear connected with senior Brayden Derouin on a nine-yard TD pass to extend the Broncos lead to 44-0.

“It was nice to see us come out with a big win on homecoming,”Broncos coach Caleb Adams said. “Our guys came out and played with maximum effort and put in a lot of time and effort on the practice field and we were able to transfer that to the game.”

The Wykons did get on the board with 10:38 to go in the fourth quarter on a 30-yard TD run by Saul Kobussen who finished the night with seven carries for 41 yards and a TD.

The Broncos will return to action Friday as they host Houghton.
