Bay College defeats Montcalm in four sets

ESCANABA — A strong defensive effort from sophomore Addie Morton led Bay College to a victory over Montcalm in four sets 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18 here Wednesday. Morton had eight of her 12 kills during the fourth and final set of the match.

“I started the game out rough,” Morton said. “I came into the fourth set with a clear mind and just trying to get back into my groove.”

After falling 25-22 to the Centurions in the third set, and trailing 4-1 early in the fourth set. The Norse responded, scoring eight of the next 11 points including a pair of kills by Morton during a five-point scoring run by sophomore Jade Jasenovsky to put the Norse up 10-7.

The game remained tight as Morton delivered a pair of kills to extend the Norse lead to 17-12.

Montcalm answered with a three-point scoring run to cut the deficit to one.

The Norse quickly answered with a six-point serving run extending the Norse lead to 24-16 Montcalm cut the deficit to 24-18 on a ace by sophomore Alanna Kent but the Norse put the match away with a kill by freshman Ava Maki.

“I was expecting it to be a pretty close match,” Norse coach Dan Porath said. “I thought we had them in the third set but we weren’t playing aggressive enough, it was like we were playing not to lose but we did enough in that fourth set to come away with the win.”

The Norse used a four-point serving run late in the first set to secure the win in that set. Sophomore Mia Hauser had four of her nine kills in that first set.

Maki had a pair of kills and a block in the second set with the block putting the Norse up 24-16. Montcalm went on a four-point serving run but could not close the gap.

Montcalm had there best effort of the night in the third set as they jumped out to an early 5-2 lead. The Norse answered with a four-point scoring run to put the Norse up 7-5. The game went back and forth with three ties, the last one was broken by a kill by Kent to put Montcalm up 15-14.

The Norse tied the mat freshman Haylee Gatien, but the Centurions scored five of the next seven points to take the set.
