CARNEY — Carney-Nadeau was in control throughout as it defeated Stephenson in straight sets, (25-17, 25-12, 25-15) in a Skyline Central Conference matchup here Tuesday.
The Wolves jumped out to an early 6-1 lead on a pair of aces by junior Paige Jardeen. The Eagles tied the game on an ace by senior Olivia Cappaert and then took the lead during a five-point serving run at 7-6.
The Wolves recaptured the lead at 10-9 and were up 12-10 when Eagles freshman Eva Schmidt went down with an injury and would not return. With the Wolves leading 14-12, Jardeen went on a five-point serving run to extend the Wolves lead to 18-12.
Stephenson scored four of the next five points to cut the deficit to three but the Wolves ended the set with a five-point scoring run by junior Blake Polfus-Coleman.
“I have been working on my serving a lot,” Polfus-Coleman said. “Im just trying to get better every time out and go on as long of a run as I can.”
The second set started very close with the teams tied at three when Jardeen went on a 10-point serving run to put the Wolves up 14-3. Jardeen had three aces in the run.
“We have a really young team” Jardeen said. “We push hard because we want to have a shot to compete for a district title.”
The eagles fought hard but were unable to close the gap as they dropped the set.
“We didn’t get down on ourselves,” Eagles coach Jackson Miller said. “We have some good senior leaders who are working hard and the team will continue to improve every time on the floor.”
The Wolves jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third set on a kill by senior Elodie Lenca. The wolves extended the lead to 11-4 on an ace by eight grader Jenah Ernest.
“We lost six seniors last season,” Wolves coach Steve Kedsch said. “These younger girls have done a great job this year. They are focused in practice and we are starting to come together as a team very well.”
The Wolves will be back in action tonight as they travel to North Dickinson.
