Sports Flashback Sept. 14-20
Sept. 14, 1970 — John Vogt was a thorn in Menominee’s side, helping the Escanaba Eskymos post a 19-6 football victory. The junior tailback ran 17 times for 66 yards, intercepted a pass and scored on a 30-yard fumble recovery return. Bill Suriano added a one-yeard touchdown run and Tom Kangas booted a 24-yard field goal.
Ron Koth earned medalist honors in the Grand Dad Day tournament at the Highland Golf Club with a 72. He was followed by Dave Wolfgram and Arthur Bowe at 74 and William Severinsen and Dr. G.H. Bast 75.
Sept. 19, 1970 — The Gladstone Braves won for the third time this season, posting a 22-0 football triumph over the Ishpeming Hematites. Gary LeClaire led the Braves’ ground attack with 76 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries and Gary Young added 60 yards in 15 attempts. LeClaire scored on a two-yard plunge and seven-yard run and Bob Prins added the remaining score on a quarterback sneak. Pat McGeary was Gladstone’s defensive leader with 10 tackles.
Kendall Neeson ran for a TD and passed for two, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Manistique Emeralds from dropping a 28-22 decision to the Munising Mustangs. Neeson completed 12-of-23 aerials for 170 yards with eight of those going to Dave Michelson for 117.
Edward E. Walle of Elmwood Park, Ill. sank a hole-in-one at the Highland, using a 4-iron to drain his first ace on the 175-yard, No. 7 hole.
Sept. 15, 1975 — Patty Kennedy scored 14 points, leading the Gladstone girls to a 40-28 basketball victory over the West Iron County Wykons. Ann Altese added 10 points and 14 rebounds and Molly Harris led West Iron with 14 points.
The Escanaba Eskymos rolled past the Negaunee Miners 47-19 in their season-opener. Sharon Schultz paced the Eskymos with 13 points and Jean White grabbed 16 rebounds.
Sept. 19, 1975 — Munising’s Greg Harger set the course record at Gladstone golf club, covering the 2.8 miles in 12:36 in a triangular cross country meet. Gladstone’s Tom Theoret was runner-up at 13:34. Marquette won the meet with 35 points, followed by Munising 50 and Gladstone 56.
The Powers North Central Jets presented Sue Nyquist with her first coaching victory, topping the Rapid River Rockets 37-26. Debbie Whitens led the Jets with 10 points. Wendy Frazer added nine and Tina DelBello had eight. Patty Thibault was Rapid River’s leader with eight points and 16 boards.
Sept. 20, 1975 — The Escanaba Eskymos snapped a two-game losing streak with a 27-0 football triumph over West Iron County. Jerry Moran rushed for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Mark Beveridge added 57 yards and a TD and Carl Johnson scored on a one-yard run.
