Sports Flashback Sept. 14-20

Sept. 17, 1960 — The Bark River-Harris Broncos rushed for 176 yards, rolling to a 26-0 football victory over the Carney-Nadeau Wolves. John Martin scored twice. Larry Luchay dashed 30 yards for a touchdown. Jerry Sundquist added another score on a quarterback sneak and Ken Hammerberg collected three fumble recoveries in the Wolverine Conference opener.

Manistique’s upset bid fell short in a 20-13 loss to the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils. The Emeralds scored first on a 61-yard dash by Jim Malloch, who later added a five-yard touchdown run.

It was a similar situation for the Gladstone Braves as their bid for an upset came up short in a 19-7 loss to the Ishpeming Hematites. The Braves scored first on Ray Butler’s 20-yard run.

Sept. 19, 1960 — Bob Rosemurgy ran for 101 yards, including an 84-yard TD dash, leading the Escanaba Eskymos to a 19-6 triumph over the Munising Mustangs in a Great Lakes Conference contest. Phil Davidson added a TD on a 64-yard pass from Jim Almonroeder and Lionel Beaumeir scored on a 13-yard run.

The Rock Little Giants opened their season on a positive note in a 31-7 conquest of the Powers-Spalding Tigers. Russell Dees provided Rock with a five-yard TD run. Tom Sharkey tossed a nine-yard TD pass to Gilbert Norman, who added a 20-yard TD run. Dick Rademacher scored from 15 yards on a blocked punt and Robert Salmi sprinted 14 yards for a TD. Jim O’Neil got the Tigers’ lone score on a five-yard run in another Wolverine Conference opener.

Sept. 18, 1965 — Tom Brawley scored on a 16-yard pitch from Dave Barton in the final three minutes, lifting the Manistique Emeralds to a 13-12 triumph over the Gladstone Braves. Sam Burns dashed 91 yards for Manistique’s first TD and Gladstone’s Gary Larson scored on a one-yard run.

Bill Bellefeul rushed for 90 yards. Ray Payment added 77 on the ground and Bob Haack finished with 76 in Escanaba’s 21-6 Great Northern Conference triumph over the Stephenson Eagles. Bellefeul scored from 15 yards on a reverse. Payment had a seven-yard TD run and added a score from five yards. Ed Gauthier intercepted two passes and Steve Oman and Paul Miller swiped one apiece.

Scott Reidy scored three TDs and Mike Folcik added a pair, leading Powers-Spalding past BR-H 34-14. The Tigers gained 252 yards in the Wolverine Conference match-up. The Broncos finished with 126.
