Marquette beats Esky tennis in a close match
ESCANABA — Escanaba girls tennis team got Anna Martin back at No. 1 singles Tuesday. The Eskymos now only short Lily Benetti at No. 4 singles the Eskymos are finally getting close to back to their full lineup. However it was not enough as they fell 5-3 to Marquette.
Anna was able to win her match today at No. 1 singles over Marquette’s Marin Johnson 6-3, 6-0. “Anna won rather decisively today,” Eskymos coach Chris Ogren said. “Anna mixed up her shots well and did a great job of finishing at the net.”
Aubrey Elliott and Brooklyn Hackelman picked up the win at No. 1 doubles as they defeated Marquette’s Eva Kentala and Lola Rink 6-0, 6-1. “Elliott and Hackelman looked dialed in from the start today,” Ogren said.
There were three 3-set matches on the day including at No. 2 singles where Escanaba’s Sophie Hill and Isabella Noblet defeated Marquette’s Logan McFarren and Kylie Smith 4-6, 6-4,6-4.
“This was the third consecutive set they had dropped to Marquette,” Ogren said. “They knew they were capable if they played to their strengths. Sophie started playing really smart tennis; lobbing at the right times, while also hitting some aggressive baseline shots in key moments and Bella’s volleys were looking the best they had all year.”
