Hannahville volleyball earns first wins in 2025

HANNAHVILLE — Hannahville came into their Northern Lights League contest against Munising Baptist on a mission to claim their first win of the season and they got two as they won both games of a double match against Munising Baptist here Monday. In the first set Hannahville won, 25-22, 25-17, 25-19. In the second set Hannahville won in four sets, 25-16, 25-22, 25-27, 25-15.

Match One:

The Bobcats jumped out to an early 3-0 start in the first set. Hannahville scored five of the next seven points to tie the game at five, then took the lead at 6-5 and extended it to 8-5 on an ace by freshman Grayce Williams.

The Bobcats answered back as seventh grader Alta had a four-point serving run with four aces to put the Bobcats back in front 10-8. The match remained close and thee Bobcats led 12-10 when Hannahville scored seven of the next eight points to put the Soaring Eagles back in front 17-13 on an ace by sophomore Karlie Alexander.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game you would ever see,” Hannahville coach Char Sagataw said. “But our girls fought hard and did what they had to do to win the match. This is our first win of the season and this will be a good boost to their confidence going forward.”

The Bobcats closed out the first set scoring five of the last eight points but fell 25-22.

In the second set Hannahville quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead and extended the lead to 10-3 on four-point service run. The Bobcats fought hard but ultimately fell 25-17 in the stanza.

In the third set the Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead on an ace by Alta. Hannahville scored five of the next seven points to take the lead at 5-2. Munising Baptist responded with a four-point serving run to regain the lead at 7-5.

Alexander put Hannahville back in the lead on a trio of aces at 11-7 and never looked back taking the set 25-19.

Match Two:

In the first set, Hannahville jumped out to a 5-2 lead on an ace by Williams. Williams then got a kill to extend the lead to 17-11.

The Bobcats struggled with consistency as they fell 25-16 in the first set.

In the second set, Hannahville led 4-3 when the Bobcats eighth grader Hailey Hosteter went on a five-point serving run to put the Bobcats in front 8-4. Hannahville scored the next four points to tie the game at four. The lead went back and forth with both teams scoring on small runs.

Hannahville eighth grader Zakarie Halfaday had an ace to put the Soaring eagles up 23-19 and Hannahville hung on to take the 25-22 win the set.

In the third set, Munising Baptist led 7-3 when eighth grader Audrey Maloney went on a five-point scoring run extending the Bobcats lead to 13-3. The Bobcats still held a 10 point lead at 21-11 when Hannaville senior Brittany Thunder went on a 9-point serving run including three aces to cut the deficit to 21-20. The set was tied on two occasions late in the game but the Bobcats won the set 27-25.

In the fourth set, Munising Baptist jumped out to a 9-2 lead but the Soaring Eagles battled back and won the set on a 10-point serving run by freshman Shondreya Shawno Frye.

“It was kinda scary,” Shawno Frye said. “I thought some of my serves were not going to get over but I was able to get them all over and it felt really good.

These victories marked the first wins for Hannahville this season and Hannaville coach Char Sagataw stated. “These wins will definitely boost our confidence going forward,” Sagataw said. “I learned that this team can push hard even after losing the third set and falling behind in the fourth they kept pushing and working hard and they came back to get the win.”
